I bought a Traktor Kontrol S4 at auction without any software or accessories. After much research I was able to get it running with Traktor 2 software, but nothing later. My questions: * Is it possible to get it working with a later version of Traktor software? If so, which ones? * Is it possible to get an activation code for such an old version? Right now I'm using it on Demo mode (i.e. limited to 30-minute sessions). If anybody's been able to get it working with Mixxx, I'd happily accept that as an alternative. Is it possible to get it working with a later version of Traktor software? If so, which ones?
Is it possible to get an activation code for such an old version? Right now I'm using it on Demo mode (i.e. limited to 30-minute sessions).

At least with Windows a Traktor Kontrol S4 Mk1 should work with the latest version of Traktor Pro 4. You can buy a license for Traktor Pro 4.

On a Mac S4 Mk1 won‘t work because there are no drivers for recent versions of macOS.

Traktor DJ is a different software than Traktor Pro. Traktor DJ is end-of-life for years. It isn‘t supported anymore.

I do not know what software that the device originally came with but if you can get NI Support to transfer the device to your account then if it came with 'base' software originally that came as a download rather than per CD then NI would possibly give you your own copy upon registration. I am not sure how it all works for old devices and possibly the rule is not valid for all old devices but you could try.

Contact N.I. Support and ask them to transfer the device to your account (also include picture of serial on bottom of device as well as purchase receipt.) . Then if whoever the device is presently registered to do not object if/when contacted by NI then NI Support will transfer it to you and you should also receive any base software for the device if any…

Solved! I'd tried Traktor Pro 4 on two different (Windows 11) laptops with no success. But now that I reinstalled it after installing Traktor DJ 2, it works. The issue, I believe, is that Traktor Pro 4 doesn't include the S4 MK1 driver. This is pretty much confirmed in the Traktor 4 Pro installation window below, which is missing MK1.

However, Traktor Pro 4 seems to accept and understand the MK1 driver that Traktor DJ 2 installed. So I'm in business!

O.K., I was a overly cynical — the bot was actually useful. It directed me to enter the serial number in Native Access.

UNFORTUNATELY it's only 16 characters on the S4 MK1 and Native Access requires a 25-character string. sigh

Very useful. I'm pretty sure I tried installing the driver before Traktor Pro 4 before, and it still didn't work. Maybe there's another component in Traktor DJ 2 that was needed? Or maybe I forgot how I did things — it was a few weeks ago.

Anyway, I now have Traktor Pro 4 running in Demo mode, and a ticket filed to see whether I can get the full software for free or at a discount (unlikely).

At best then if you get the device transferred to your account then you can get the TP version that came with your device at that time. If you get that version then depending on what you get then that might serve as base for getting the TP 4 at update price , but I don't know what you could possibly get if and if then what qualifies as base for an update !
