For the Machine Mk3, in the controller editor, is there no reserved midi addresses for the shift layer? As in, I have no way of assigning a separate output for the parameters = for the shift key being held down. ?

no that´s not implemented, you can only handle it by the software you use it with, if it can do stuff like that or with other workarounds that may exist.
Hmm.. 🤔 that's odd. Even to communicate with Machine 3 software, the buttons would have to send a different message when Shift is held down. So what happened, did the engineers just not bother to map it out for MIDI mode?
This is pretty bad. All those useful extra functions on the pads would be really nice to use in the daw. I've never seen any controller that doesn't send a separate message with their shift layer.
this is simply one of those instances where 3rd party software can be handy, which would provide the "Shift" or "dual button shift" "Hold" "Doublepresses" functions you are looking for…
the best program to carry this out is Bomes Midi Translator Pro…. that said Bomes has alot more useful functions as well, midi feedback, transforming midi… sysex triggering, midi to keyboard press
it also provides some virtual midi ports if needed
if you desire flexibility for midi mode on standard controllers or for use with NI's controller editor, bome midi translator pro is certainly the way to go
just be aware of the hardware limitations of the midi controllers you choose to use with Bomes… in my experience Maschine Jam controllers are the best controllers to work with in midi mode,
you can run x4 maschine Jam controllers in midi mode, if you wanted a stupid amount of buttons and touch sliders
another alternative to Bome midi translator pro… is using the ReaperDAW + Realearn…
The Machine Mk3 seems to be sending the same message from the pads, whether the Shift is pressed down or not. The buttons don't send any message at all when shift is held down. Shift seems to only be an internal system. *sigh`
shift is just for "internal" purposes, like reaching the settings and midi presets.
yea i forgot to mention… that Bomes midi translator pro doesnt make use of the "shift" button…
Bomes uses standard midi button to act as a alternative "shift" button albeit modifier button
the shift function is not usable in the standard midi mode afaik
