Root Drive Update Failures: Why is there no automated migration tool in 2026?

Can Native Access be improved to move all applicable libraries to a new location prior to using "Relocate All" ? …… All of my libraries and possibly some applications, programs and user content are located on D:\ the root level of a dedicated sample drive, as they have been for many years. This includes many other libraries from other companies, and Kontakt libraries from other companies which are not managed by Native Access. Today Native Access showed 68 updates!! 26 of these failed with the error "download failed". I understand the likely problem is that NI doesn't want to put things at the root level anymore. That would have been nice to know a few years ago. Your "Relocate All" solution sounds easy. But it isn't when you have hundreds of intermixed libraries (not just NI), some of which will "break" in your DAW if they are moved. Even 1 broken library can be a nightmare. It is no easy task to identify every individual NI library which I need to move, prior to moving them and using Relocate All.

As far as relocation goes, being able to tell NA to relocate the products rather than telling NA you've relocated them would be really, really useful. Until then, you can generally guess the folders that contain NI products as they pretty much all begin with the product name and end in Library. Not ideal, but it might help narrow down the folders you can move without breaking everything else.

Before my original post, I had a long long "chat" with Google AI. Google AI kept repeating that the installation location at D: root level is the cause of the error, I don't know where it got that info (and no, I don't believe everything AI says). With Komplete 15 Ultimate, it appears I have over 200 NI products, and most of the names don't end with "Library". Also they are mixed in with libraries from other vendors, so I can't be guessing at which ones should move or not. The workaround of using Re-install instead of update … maybe that would work for these 28 failed downloads, if it doesn't cause other problems (like wiping out settings in those products which are already set to work with my DAW) … Bottom line for me is, I feel the NI update process is broken and I'm hoping NI will fix it before one of these updates becomes critical for me. To try working around it is going to cost more time and potentially spawn other problems.

Having just gone through this over the last couple of days I can honestly say you're way better off managing these file transfers to new locations manually.

In my case I had an older generation 4tb Crucial SSD I'd had for a couple of years that was formatted xFAT and was starting to give me problems where Windows would intermittently force it to reconnect. My newer generation 4tb Crucial SSD I re-fortmatted to NTFS when I got it so it had no problems. Situations like this would be very hard for Native Access to diagnose and come up with a solution as it involves some manual steps and manipulations that can really only be done by a human using standard Windows disk management utilities. Especially when it comes to thinking strategically about how to best arrange the libraries across all of your storage often changing the drive designation. Especially because, like in this case, I ordered a 2nd new generation 4tb drive to take the place of my older one and simply use my older one as a scratch area after I relocated it's libraries.

I'd be afraid if NI came up with a way to automatically move libraries and setups in bulk, it would only be useful in the most simple situations and some one might try to do something more complex and get upset when it messed things up.

In my experience I've learned when it comes to moving libraries around, figuring it out for myself has far and away given me less issues than when I've tried to use their bulk library relocation features.

It isn't clear whether I should have to move my libraries away from the root level at all. Is there a definitive statement about this from NI? Is this really why 40% of my downloads failed? Why did 60% update successfully? And if I do have to move them, I think NI could provide a utility to identify which folders should be moved or not, then move them, run a bulk relocate, and delete the old folders. When buying a bundle as large as Komplete 15 Ultimate, and there are constant updates, I think its reasonable to expect the update process to be clean, as it has been in the past.

Do what I do:

These are my standard defaults and have been for over a decade now.

The only folder path you should ever interact with in this dialog is the Content Location.

But the trick is to "inform" NA of your "new" location first:

Change The Content Location path
Exit out of NA
MOVE your stuff to the new target location
Fire up NA.

When NA comes back up - it will post red flags on all missing libraries - then - you can proceed to "Relocate" everything.

NOTE 1 : If you deviate from this order - chaos is sure to follow.

NOTE 2: This process ONLY works for library content. If you attempt to manually move Expansions, tools, executables or anything else that NA installs - you will have issues and will need to Reinstall

If you simply know the rules around the Content Location path - you can move things anywhere at anytime. No need for a fancy rewrite of NA or dedicated migration tools.

@yoursong There might be several issues at once here. There is an issue right now with updates getting a download fialed, as you can see here. Workaround is to end the download process in Native Access, clear the queue and use the reinstall feature of Native Access instead.

Then it could be an other issue on your system, if the workaround does not work for example, that would be a sign.

Installing stuff on the root level is never a good idea, generally speaking. We recommend to keep the default locations for the applications, as outlined in this article: How to Change the Install Locations in Native Access

and additionally i don´t think you really install the libraries all on the root level folder, every library will have it´s own sub folder, so that should not be an issue. I guess it´s what @jeremy linked first, as others have that too on some windows installations.

I think this is part of the problem with the large collections. They're a total mish mash of all things Native Instruments such as Instruments, Synths, Tools, Loops, One Shots and if you don't plan everything ahead when you initially install it there can be numerous issues because of the requirements of different products and that's what you're facing now.

Without knowing the specifics of the 40% that failed it would be impossible to give you any good guidance about where and how to move them. Many of us never had to deal with this because we built our collection of NI stuff one at a time. If I were you I'd open a support call with NI and go through all of these things that are failing and how or even IF you should move them. IMO Native Instruments is the one that created this swamp, they need to spend the time to work out how you can fix it. I seriously doubt, in this case, there's a one simple action to fix it…but I could be wrong.

While one could certainly fill the root full of default library folders - for basic housekeeping (and sanity) - I always step down just a single level on a content drive and create a single folder IN the root - called Libraries. The next level is Vendor.

So if it's the L:\ Drive:

L:\Libraries\Native Instruments

L:\Libraries\Toontrack

L:\Libraries\Spectrasonics

etc.

Neat. Tidy. And very easy to move around if need be.

On a closing note - I do not believe the OP's "failures" have anything to do with root locations or anything like that - it is most likely these same issues that many of us are facing right now with these Massive X expansion updates failing on masse.

Absolutely - I also do it that way but as I don't own much 3rd party libraries I just have one library folder on my f drive (native instruments) and then within that every library has it's subfolder

Thanks for all the ideas. I just need to clarify a few points …

My goal is if possible, to avoid having to manually identify, move, relocate or reinstall hundreds of NI folders, apart other manufacturers, and then potentially the troubleshooting that almost always occurs when you try to make changes of this scale.

I never change the default location for applications. My D:\ is a dedicated sample drive only. The NI folders on D:\ are whatever folders determined by the “Content Location” preference in Native Access
My intention of using D:\ was to keep it simple, a flat folder structure. Why does NI or Windows care if the libraries are at root level of a dedicated sample drive vs creating several root level container folders? Either way, you have folders at the root level.
Why have all past updates run perfectly fine from NI as well as other vendors? What has changed wrt Native Access?
I did provide a list of the downloads that failed, it’s in a Word doc my March 3 posting above. I don’t know if these are all related to Massive X, maybe someone can help with that. If Massive X updates are the problem, does anyone know when to expect a fix?

Native Access will "allow" you to do anything.

Does not mean what you choose to do - is necessarily technically sound or a good idea in any way.

I (used) D for decades but now I use L:\.

If you truly want a manageable structure - you owe to yourself to follow the strong advice above and create a single Native Instruments folder IN the root of the drive and let things percolate from there:

This setup is bulletproof and VERY easy to migrate (and BACKUP) to a new drive OR completely new DAW by simply dragging one folder from drive to drive. Instead of trying to account for (potentially) hundreds of folders scattered all over the root of a drive. Makes no sense to create work by allowing that to happen.

My settings above contain 2 levels on the my Content Drive (Libraries) and (Native Instruments) - but I do this so I can apply this "NI" logic to all my other libraries to make them easy to backup AND easy to transfer as needed.

As others have noted - you can install your stuff - any which way you want. All I am doing is suggesting better management for the long haul. Most folks can't really see the benefits of these file management paths until a rebuild is on your agenda - but trust me - when you need things centralized - this is the way.

And yes - most if not all of your issues are Massive X related. Easy workaround - here are two more I tried just seconds ago:

"Installing stuff on the root level" isn't necessarily bad. If you only have sample folders on the drive it's no different to having a single folder called 'Samples' with everything in it. Obviously that assumes it's not your boot drive and you're using something like NTFS not FAT16! Splitting stuff into separate folders is better for organisation, but that's the only difference.

I'm pretty sure Native Access doesn't care where the libraries are installed as long as they're where it expects to find them.

There's certainly a problem with installs on Windows systems at the moment, but as people with libraries stored in non-root folders are having problems I think it's unrelated

Personally I think it's just an ongoing struggle anytime someone gets involved in a complex area of technology to define a storage strategy for dealing with all the various software pieces and 3rd party vendors that you may encounter and their sometimes unique requirements. I know I had to reconsider a number storage decisions over the years as I began to expand into virtual instruments that had their own unique environments. I seriously doubt this will change any time soon as everyone wants to do certain things differently due to business strategies. NI is no different other than they have a large enough mass of vendors that you can operate fairly consistently under their umbrella and be assured things will work if the company is at least "compliant" with their standards.

But there are always going be outliers in such things such as Toontrack, Soundpaint and increasingly Spitfire Audio where you'll have to adapt your organization strategy a bit differently for each vendor. It's just the way of the world these days.

I addressed this by creating an actual document - where I did an agonizingly deep analysis of where everything gets installed over several years of DAW builds and then finally standardized everything back in late 2023-2024.

This new template addresses everything from default installation locations for ALL vendor platforms, all possible library scenarios, custom file and folder junctions for VST plugin locations - the whole nine yards.

Now when building a DAW - this specific guide is the defacto roadmap for my sanity. It keeps everything logical and never allows any vendor installer or any app to introduce it's "defaults" into my configuration.
