Is the traktor s4 limited to only 8 cue points, via Hotcues?

Hi team, I am trying to develop my skills using the Traktor S4 Kontroller and find that I need to set up more than 8 cue points to time my transitions and then beat jump around each track, or set loops.

Ideally I would like to have another 4-6 'memory' cues as visual aids.

From the image below you can see the limitations and my attempt to work around it. So far this is the main defficiency I have come across when comparing to Rekordbox.

I have seen in th forums that there are supposibly 25-32 Cues, but the only thing I could find is re-mapping the 1 button for Grid to Fade In.

I showed you a picture of the GUI button you can use to place them. Just go to the location in the timeline you want the hotcue to be placed. Press CUE (located right next to PLAY) to set a floating cue point (white triangle at the bottom of the waveform), then press the STORE button. Now you have a blue flag at the position. It will have a number if one of the eight numbers is still free.

Please check your Traktor version. It's the topmost rightside button with the NI symbol. You most certainly are not using the most recent version of Traktor Pro. You are using a version (early TP4 or any TP3) that does not support flexible beatgrids, which is when the separation of grid markers and hotcues was introduced. Your list shows 'Autogrid'. That's a gridmarker that will not show in the list of hotcues in late TP4 versions. But really it doesn't matter that much which version you are using. The process remains the same.

Now you can add a mapping assignment to some unused button on the S4 or unused key on your keyboard mapping with the corresponding command.

'Add in… → Track Deck → Cue → Store Floating Cue/Loop as Next Hotcue' is the equivalent of the STORE button in the GUI.

'Add in… → Track Deck → Cue → Set Cue and Store as Next Hotcue' is the equivalent of CUE button + STORE button combined in a single command.

You will find your mappings (both for the S4 and your keyboard) in Preferences → Controller Manager. Select your mapping in the device dropdown menu at the top. The 'Add in…' button is at the bottom of the assignments list.

Using a hardware key or button is going to make your life a lot easier. :)

Only 8 cue points can have numbers.

Use the mapping command 'Track Deck → Cue → Set Cue and Store as Next Hotcue' or 'Track Deck → Cue → Store Floating Cue/Loop as Next Hotcue'.

If you want to code qml, use these two:

app.traktor.decks.X.track.cue.set_and_store
app.traktor.decks.X.track.cue.store

In each case, the first command does two things: Set a cue point at the needle position + Save it using the next free numbe or, if all 8 are already in use, leave it unnumbered.

The second command uses the last floating cue you already set (using CUE or LOOP_IN) and does only the second part (the assignment).

You can use 'Jump to next/previous Cue/Loop' to jump to any cue point, even the unnumbered ones.

That's about all you can do.

Edit: Here is the GUI controls, if you don't want to map commands to a controller. The one in the middle does stores the floating cue/loop. The arrows left and right let you jump to cue points.

Last piece to the puzzle, is how do I get the flag for the Cue in the Waveform? I see I can create many of the above, but cant see what it actuaklly does…

The list shows all cue points, with the names you entered manually. It's not the list of numbers used (n.n. means 'not named'.

Since AutoGrid is listed, i am assuming you are using TP3. In TP4, grid markers are no longer cue points and won't show up in this list.

Only the numbers 1 to 8 are used, any more cue points won't show up with numbers.

The flag is blue for type=cue, orange for fade (in/out), green for loop (in/out) and a white triangle (when you are using TP3) for gridmarker. 'out' points reverse the flag direction. There is a dropdown menu where you can choose the type.

You can place at least 60 (unnumbered) hot cues. Haven't tried any more but 60+ should be sufficient for any track.

are you able to screen shot how this looks, as even after naming the n.n cues I cant see them in the waveform? I will be super appreciative if this works as expected?

Im also pretty sure I am using TP4 as part of Traktor S4 Mk3, but

I dont need the cues numbered, I just need them flagged on the waveform so I can see when to start transitions.

I see the error of my ways, I created all the no named Cues on top of each other, hence why I could see them. Surely there is a better way of placing them then using these buttons?

LEGEND, I was missing the step of hitting the Cue bottom to set the floating Cue Point prior to storing the new Cue point. This is an amazing breakthrough, thank you for your support and very quick responses🤩!

Fantastic mate, I have learned a lot about the software today.

Will have a look in the manual if there are instructions on how to configure these settings…
