Effects Send not Assignable to Deck

Experimenting with external effects routing and for some reason when I switch to external mixing and assign an FX unit to send I am no longer able to toggle that FX units assignment to my decks. It is just grayed out and no matter what all audio from every deck sends to that FX unit.

Does anyone know why this is? Without being able to toggle the FX unit assignment I cant achieve the work flow I envisioned.

Im using my old S4 MK2 to try and prove this concept before I purchase new gear. Here is the routing:

I have deck A playing: my main out wired into > Input A, and im using my headphones to monitor the return signal. When the monitoring and I turn on the FX unit assigned to send I hear a wet signal, even when the decks FX channel assign is a blank grey square as pictured above. Am I missing something?

My goal is to toggle FX assign per deck. Send the FX units assigned dry audio out to a pedal and then bring it back to a return channel.

I'm not sure if that will be possible without external mixer that has send/return. Unless you give up something like cue. Select deck with cue → headphone into fx unit → back into a input → live input deck?

The send/return effects in Traktor are mean to send a signal TO Traktor, and return the signal back to the (external) mixer. At least that is how I use it with my xone 96.

I can't remember if I can assign the "send" effects to a deck. I will have to look it up at home.
