Ozone 11 vs. Apple Studio Display

This was unexpected….

I have been running Reaper on my Mac mini (2018) with a pair of 1080p monitors and all has been mostly fine. Then I replaced one of those monitors with an Apple Studio Display. Suddenly, a mix I'd been working on started breaking up and distorting during playback, but only under specific conditions.

The distortion happened if I had the Ozone plugin visible and its window was displaying on the new monitor. (I use Ozone during mixing to get a detailed comparison to a reference mix.) Something as simple as moving the fx window onto the remaining 1080p monitor (HDMI) made the distortion stop. Which part of Ozone I was watching seemed to make no difference.

I haven't seen any other plugins that cause a similar problem...yet.

The Reaper performance monitor showed no change throughout this, but the system activity monitor showed an increase in Reaper's CPU usage by over a full core, 170% to 320%

Most likely because Ozone is not designed for any resolution higher than Standard HD.

Change the Studio Display to 1080p and I would bet you are golden.

You are sort of right.

The display doesn't have a 1080p setting for its aspect ratio by default, but dropping it to 2048x1152 reduces the distortion and 1600x900 seems to get rid of it. However, as a fix this would be a case of the tail wagging the dog.

What really baffles me is, having done programming on Macs professionally for a few decades, I have trouble imagining how I would cause this kind of bad behaviour in a program even if I wanted it. 😶

Using outdated graphic libraries will do that…

NI software also doesn't like refresh rate higher than 60Hz, by the way.

Vocalpoint is right in the regard of lowering the resolution as a temporary remedy. He might, however, not be aware that Apple Studio Display (5K 5120x2880 resolution in HiDPI) is the most common monitor in Mac professional audio/video world and those users will not suddenly downgrade to 1080p monitor, just because of NI/Izotope software.

Exactly the point of my "tail wagging the dog" comment. I have Ozone because it was included as part of the Komplete package. Using it is not important enough to me that I'm going to lobotomize my new monitor.

Making a note to avoid Izotope software is a much more appealing option if that's the only other choice.
