Using Maschine PLUS standalone with an old controller (M-Audio Ozonic)
Hi All,
I am pretty excited since I discovered the Maschine ecosystem by purchasing a Maschine+. It is a steep learning curve for a guy used to sequential timelines (Reason, Cubase), but it is totally worth it, and once you get it, I discovered how much fun it could be! I always wanted to make myself a DAWless set up and it is taking shape. I even envision doing a live gigs with this in the future.
For now, I had to 'borrow' my Komplete Kontrol (KK) keyboard from my DAW studio.
I have an old controller taking dust and that I stopped using a decade ago as it uses firewrire: The M-Audio ozonic. Couldn't set myself to sell it because I love it, but had to stop using it for practical reasons (My firewire card was not functioning correctly). So like many, I switched to USB.
But… The ozonic has MIDI IN and OUT, perfect: it could rise from the dust and function again. _ I tested the Ozonic by connecting it directly on an old FM synth (TG33 from Yamaha). Worked like a charm.
_ Connected it to the M+. The M+ doesn't detect anything. :-(
_ Switched back to the Komplete Kontrol (KK) keyboard on the M+. Works perfectly.
_ used the KK to play the TG33. Work perfectly too.
All tests were carried out using the 5 pin MIDI In for the M+ and Midi Out of the Ozonic. MIDI channels were set correctly on all machines.
What am I not getting? Chat GPT tells me that it could be because the voltage used for MIDI the signal had evolved with time, and the OUT signal of this old controller would not be 'strong ' enough for the M+ to detect. I have a doubt about that explanation, but cannot find any other…
Anyone has some insight on this? my KK keyboard needs to get back to the DAW studio! It would be a shame to not use such a cool device as the Ozonic just because of this!
Musically,
Edouard

When you connect with a DIN cable, the devices don't "detect" anything, like they do with USB.
Make sure you've got some sounds loaded into the Plus, then check the MIDI routing to ensure that the DIN input is set to trigger that sound/group. Also check the keyboard range, as the keys you're hitting may be playing notes above/below the notes assigned to the Plus sounds
It's all in the manual!

I do not know about Maschine Plus, but just for your information, you can still find a PCI-to-Firewire card and use your Ozonic again. Like this one:

First thing I would check is if the DIN input is even activated (default setting for Status is Off)
SETTINGS button, then MIDI tab and in the options controllable with the knobs, on the second screen you’ll find Input Devices and STATUS. Select Maschine Plus/Maschine Plus MIDI 1 with 5th knob and check with 6th knob if STATUS is Off or On.
Of course if you are not already sure it is activated ☺️
