Just to be sure then you would want to try another USB-C to A adapter/cable . Earlier in time then some USB-C to A adapters simply didn't work. I have tried this myself with mobile phones. Also you would want to try another USB port. Though usually then the advice to use a hub usually is given only when using an USB.C port then standard advice is this (use a self powered USB-C hub) :
