My Guitar Rig VST3 doesn't work with Ableton live 11

Hello !

I just purchased Guitar Rig 7, and installed the VST3 plugin.

The plugin appears correctly on the list, but when I'm trying to use it on an audio track, the following error is shown : "Ce plug-in VST3 n'a pas pu être ouvert" (This VST3 plugin cannot be opened) - pardon my french ;)

When I ask for details, it says the plugin "cannot be opened".

I rebooted twice, reinstalled guitar rig completely, but nothing seems to work.

I'm kinda stuck here… if you have any clue, it'll be greatly appreciated !

Many thanks !

    Hello !

I finally found the solution !!!

You have to allow Ableton LIVE to access protected folders. (on windows 11 "Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.")

I'm not exactly sure why, but I found the tip on a post for the ussue on another VST3.

    Hope that helped somebody else.

Suspect that Ableton is not (or has not) scanning the VST3 plugin stash correctly.

Might want to check your plugin scan settings.

    … I re-scanned my plugins more times than I can count :)

(I even tried to move the DLL file in another folder)

Sorry that didn't change anything unfortunately.

    Fair enough.

However - I do not think this issue is specific to GR7 (or any plugin) and since this is not an Ableton forum - there is always this next step - which is nuclear:

Your choice if you want to proceed.

    Thanks for the tip…

    …but I'm afraid this still doesn't change anything :'-(

Where - exactly - is the VST3 file for Guitar Rig installed on your system?

Mac and Windows have a universal and dedicated folder that all VST3 plugins must comply with. This folder is used automatically by Native Access - and will not be listed within Preferences→File Management.

    For MAC: Library/Audio/Plug-ins/VST3

    For Windows: C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3

If Ableton is not scanning these locations (but might actually do it automatically) OR you do not see a file called Guitar Rig 7.vst3 in these locations - you have either moved it somewhere where it should not be - or it is not present at all.

You need to confirm the existence of this file.

    What OS are you running?

    Live is configurated to go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3 to get plugins ;
I confirm that I see the "Guitar Rig 7.vst3" file (~170.6 Kb)

And the plugin is correctly displayed on the left panel, under plugin section.

    I use Windows 11 Professionnal

Have you run GR7 in standalone mode first - before trying to use it in Ableton?

Give that a go and let me know what you see.

I sure did, way before trying the VST.

I am out of options then.

When you start it in standalone - have you connected a guitar and made sure the app is working, making noise, switching presets etc?

I would still start with Ableton support here before contacting NI. There are tons of users (myself included) using GR7 in a variety of hosts with no issues. Actually - GR is one of the latest NI apps that has generated the least of amount of trouble lately.

That said - I use Studio One but I have never seen a scenario like yours (in any recent host) where the instrument will not even load.

The standalone version works well, I'm really happy about it.

I also contacted Ableton support, but I have no answer yet :(

Well anyway, thank you very much for your time, I appreciate this.

    Have a nice day ! 😀

Wow. That’s a new one to me. Never seen a DAW specifically need to be allowed to see specific folders.

    Glad it’s all good now.
