I'm confused by the use of the term "modeling" in this regard. Modeling in my mind is the mathematical conversion of a measured analog circuit most commonly to it's digital representation. Are we actually talking about a "synthesized" representation as I can't grasp how one might measure the nuances of an analog instrument such that it could actually be modeled. To my ear there is a very clear difference between the two and sampled always wins.

It all depends how well things are modelled and also how well are things sampled. And what instrument is to be represented.

And put aside that model may also contain some kind of samples.

Imagine a 3D model of physical object and determine how it would vibrate when dynamically struck or pulled by another object. Imagine accounting for all the mechanical characteristics of the materials used to create these objects and how they might have fixed points of attachment, and can have their vibrations dynamically dampened. Oodles of math is essentially the task.
