So, I have bought a Maschine MK II second hand.
I'm angry about this
I bought this because it was what I could afford.
I have received an email telling me that they won't accept my serial number because it's second-hand and need to have the previous owner transfer his NI account to me or provide a receipt. If they accept a hand-written note that might work, but that's not what they mean. It's second-hand. I have the software, box and serial number. But I have to contact the owner. Well, as it turns out he bought it from someone before himself. So I am screwed. They won't let me activate the software. They tell me I should purchase the software, new. Again, that's all well and good but I can't afford it. Because? I bought it second-hand as I don't have much money. This is crazy. I have been going through this for a week. If anyone understands this I would appreciate info and advice on what I can do to get this working. I want to get back to making music. thanks
ps. I'm angry about this. forgive

Managed to get the original owner. Pure luck, but it's all working.
So thanks for all the advice.

The way i understand your situation…
you purchased the Maschine MK2 Hardware, from the seller… the seller holds the maschine software, becos the seller never wanted to sell the maschine software..So to overcome this… you need to purchase the Maschine software separately
my understanding is you dont need to register your hardware controllers… in order to use the Maschine software, thats a choice whether to or not..
A purchased maschine software however is registered to your account

to further understand the matter you are facing…
Maschine hardware does not automatically mean you have access to the software…
Hardware and software are different in respect of them being sold on the 2nd hand market
some sellers will sell both…. others sellers will only sell the hardware but not the software with it

lastly if the seller made clear… that the Maschine hardware was being sold… but didnt mention anything about the software as part of the Maschine mk2 Hardware… then it is a likely case of you misunderstanding what you were purchasing
i made the same mistake in the past… its an easy one to make… when one doesnt do any research!! i have no doubt others have also made the same mistake… live and learn

How would you feel if someone broke into your house and stole anything N.I. that you owned and then this person would be able to just go online 2 minutes later and transfer it all to other persons ownership ? You wouldn't like that ?
What N.I. do N.I. do not do to bother you but to have an least basic security built into it all ! And part of that is that people have to provide proof of purchase (e.g. a receipt).
Ït happens e.g. that people die and that those left behind do not have access to the N.I. account. It also happens that people buys something from secondhand stores and what not with nobody to transfer the serials ! And N.I. usually helps with it all !
However, you need to try to understand that there is a reason for how things work as they do.
So you need to provide N.I. with what they ask , like a receipt/proof of purchase and picture of the serials and bottom of Maschine with the serial !
Base software is non-transferable but buyer gets their own copy while seller retain their copy also, which your Maschine software is I don't know, ask N.I. to transfer and you will find out ! Buying or Selling a Native Instruments Product Second-Hand
Also then some legacy software can be downloaded from N.I. , still don't know what yours is.

I bought the hardware, the software was included, I have the box. I have the serial numbers. The only thing I don't have is a receipt. This is a MK II and it's quite old. This isn't theft.

Exactly as you're saying.
And to your point, I have bought pawn store specials Maschine Mikro and other hardware (Kore 2 and Rig Kontrol, both back in the day), and they worked fine with the software ALREADY LICENSED TO ME.
But if I hadn't already had my own license, then I would have had to buy the software directly from NI, or else I would have had to ask the prior owner to transfer the software license to me.

I believe you. But Native Instruments requires everybody to have a clear and unimpinged license to the software in order to be able to use that software.
Your serial numbers are "impinged". That means that they are registered to SOMEBODY ELSE right now. If you want access to the software, you must follow the rules and have those licenses transferred to your name. Follow the rules, and it will all work out just fine.
