since the latest update I have to hold shift to adjust the pattern length in normal amounts? otherwise it's micro adjustments of less than 1/4 note

Humm... Hold Shift+Follow/Grid then go to the Arrange sub menu, make sure you have any Grid setting other than "Off" and "Quick" is enabled.
What is your grid setting at?
