We need a switch in the preferences to enable destructive sample editing. I don't want a gazillion new samples on my hard drive because I chop a piece of a sample off.

Agreed this would save a lot of space. Adding a feature request tag to your post 👍
It's already destructive, each edit adds a number to the filename then unused edits should be automatically removed when you close the application, is this not the case for you?
I'll have to check. They may have very well made that in an update that i was unaware of but, I haven't chopped anything in a while because of that.
