WOW…. just WOW Not sure what to even say. If NI is working on a new version of Maschine, its got it work cut out for it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1XbD59wDeM
Imho DAWless is more of a hype, triggered by eurocrack-youtube-influencers. If you look at the professional touring artist, most of them are using (one or more) laptops/macbooks on stage. If they can do it….
IDK man, you gotta have pretty specific interests to even find and follow that type of creator…
Pro touring artists are probably less than 0.01% of folks who actively comment online, also most music producers have no interest in touring / are not also DJ´s or performers.
From my experience I see a lot of dawless fans who work with computers all day so they dont want their hobby to feel computer based, others are simply older and grew up using hardware stuff so want whats familiar, others barely understand computers (the typical "I updated my OS, now it don't work"), etc…. I love computers and am not in neither of those 3 categories but while touring that's the bulk of the musicians I meet — this is genre based tho, if I was into EDM I'm sure it would be the opposite as you mentioned.
Wow, I just watched the Sonicstate demo on it. The new MPC is pretty mind blowing!
I don’t got the time to learn a new performance system but if I did I would have placed an order immediately. Akai straight cooked. I don’t think there is a more dynamic instrument in existence. It’s literally too much, if I ever get more free time I think I will transfer platforms. I have never felt that way for over a decade, and I still love M+, but MPC L3 is in a league of its own.
Are you not aware of Ableton's Push 3? The way I see it, that's what kicked off this whole infatuation with MPE pads. Now Akai are just borrowing from that, and incorporating it into their MPC line.
Akai and Ableton have had a relationship since Push 1, and Akai often dabble in Ableton related stuff - APC40, APC64, Force etc.
I found it amusing that YouTuber Bolo is fawning over the Live III now, but was very vocal on his dislike of the Push 3 when (and after) he got to try one. That's the difference I suppose when Akai are sending you stuff, but Ableton are not. 🤔
owning a push 3 SA, its very hard to like it imo. the workflow is not there yet and the buttons (not pads) are so damn hard to press, its not enjoyable working on it. it looks good but its not that much fun. i much prefer the workflow of maschine+ and even the newer mpcs.
totally understand why someone doesnt like it.
I am aware, watch the SS demo, MPC is different, by a mile IMO. The configurability of motion from one of four corners of each pad, its next level coupled with different sounds in each is insanely expressive. I have a Linnstrument, which I love and would still use along side MPC, but this new hardware does so much more per pad with loads of customization.
Like I said, I ain’t getting it, it’s too much to learn for me ATM. But WOW!
I've seen loads of demos since they hit YouTube etc. so I know what it does/how it works.
For context I do have a Push 3 standalone right here (bought on launch day) and two older MPCs - one running 3.6 and the Pro Pack, so I know how they compare.
To me the Live III just comes across as a MPushC. I suppose it's a middle ground now between a standard MPC and a Push (which is deeply Ableton).
As someone who has used Push 3, owns M+ and Move, I’ll just have to disagree with you. There seems to be much more per pad (for me personally) in the MPC than Push, like not even close. Your millage may vary.
It's only "per pad" because they've hidden 64 buttons under 16 pads (presumbly to keep the MPC look), whereas the Push actually has 64 separate pads.
On that Sonicstate video, I've just heard Andy Mac say it's a "worlds first" to bring MPE to drums. Er… 🤔
I don’t get it…
Why is so difficult for someone to simply understand that people could love a new device that has been released and seems to have nailed a lot of things?
In the ballpark of “I don’t like it, so no one else must. And I will confute them till death, no matter what they say”…
No - wrong end of stick. I never said I didn't like it, or that no one else is allowed to like it.
I just don't see it as being that ground breaking/game changing. For an MPC yes it's a step up, but compared to other things that have existed for some time, it's not that big of a deal (IMO).
^ that is an over simplification, you have 64 sounds that not only have xy control but xy control independently configurable. If that isn’t extra for your workflow I understand, but the level of control and amount of textures available with just a few pads also surprised Nick Batt, I’m not alone on this.
Also, there is a middle trigger and there are dual layers so it is more like accessing 160 sounds in one 16 pad grid.
perhaps I am wrong and push can do that, albeit with more space.
i have a old Push 1 at home, also had a Push 2 which i sold. Imho the workflow of Maschine is miles ahead of what Push offers. Push is much more a "hardware controller" for Ableton Live, while Maschine really feels like a "groovebox" (i have experience with a lot of those, from RM1x and RS7000 through Roland MC505/909 to Korg Electribes).
I am a concert DJ at a medium/large concert venue here in the Netherlands, and from all the electronic/dance acts that perform, 9 out of 10 have one or more laptops on stage. I'm talking about acts like Frank Moody, Dabeull, Vitalic, Human League etc. A friend of mine does FoH/sound for a lot of large festivals here, with international top acts performing, which helps me see what they use on stage better, and most of the times there's multiple laptops on stage. Anyway, there are of course also DAW-less acts (f.e. Speedy J's STOOR sessions), but in my experience it's a lot of laptops. But I agree that if your day-job has to do with computers (like mine) it's nice to get the computer out of the equation when you just want to relax and make music.
Well said.
The kernel update was huge in allowing me to do this. All I got to do is plug my Motu into M+ or if I want/need Bitwig I plug M+ and Motu into computer.
