I launched Kontakt 7 today and tried to open Session Guitarist Electric Sunburst / Deluxe but it says my version of Kontakt is too old. I have reinstalled both Kontakt and SG but to no avail. Am I missing something obvious?

and yes - you missed this:

The new "Session" updates now require Kontakt 8.4.0 (or higher).
You will either need to upgrade Kontakt to v8, install/ue Kontakt Player 8 (for these libraries) - or if you are sticking with Kontakt 7 - you need to rollback these libraries to a prior (K7 friendly) version.

Yeah, I just found it, I'm doing a manual download now.
It's a shame they couldn't just realise a fix.

Well the only fix here - is to move to a newer version of Kontakt - which fixes everything.
v7 is now discontinued and developers are rapidly moving their updates to v8.
These "session" series instruments will not be the last libraries to see this movement - all the NI stuff will eventually need K8.

It's just over a year since a bought K7 and Komplete 14 Collectors Edition.

Kontakt 8 player is free. It can easily co-exist with v7. No cost to you and no hassle factor.
I hadn't even considered K8 Player, good shout!
