Using two Computers with Traktor - 1 for prep 1 for performance

Hey Guys,

Wondering if anyone else does this too.

I use my PC for performance and my macbook for preparing tracks ( or at least trying to )

I also use a dropbox where i store all my music for this purpose rather than a pendrive.

Both are mapped in the settings to see music from my dropbox

I can get my tracks on both pcs, and noticed that the Cue points transfer between the two, but not the stems - is this possible?

Thanks for your thoughts and help.

Would like to read some best practices on this one, too 👍🏻

Used to have a similar setup (opposite) with Google Drive for syncing tracks, but found it quite difficult to keep things in-sync. Both devices pointing to the same synced folders, locally stored (files fully available on both machines).

How do you keep the library synchronized?

Be interesting to see what responses we get. I send everything to "Dropbox" then access via either computer. It brings in comments, cue points, colour code, but Stems it doesnt do - hence the post.

I used to use an external drive and Goodsync. Data (ie Traktor folder, music tracks) on PC 1 to the external, then external to PC 2. That way nothing was in a cloud while DJing and I had a local backup.

You have to sync complete libraries. Including all Traktor files not only the music files. Stems aren‘t kept in original music files. Traktor creates an new Stem file, with a random name in a random path. The original file with its tags and cue points is linked to the stem file only via the Traktor library.

Therefore you don‘t sync stems if you online copy the music files itself.

Not sure how good syncing works that way - never tried that myself.

In my mind prepare and perform on the same machine is the best practice at least with stems. But maybe someone has better ideas.

Stems are stored as part of the Traktor file tree so as long as you sync the whole Traktor folder you should be OK.

I’m used to have custom storage folders outside of the Traktor installation folder.

That way only the application folder is ‘duplicated’ when updating Traktor, and not all content folders.

    • Traktor Pro (parent dir)
    • - Recordings
    • - Remix sets
    • - Samples
    • - Stems
    • - Tracks
    • - v400 (earliest)
    • - v402 (previous)
    • - v411 (current root)

So you’re syncing the entire Traktor Pro folder? Including preference file, which in that case cannot be unique.

I did the whole folder, the preferences on each system were exactly the same. I used two laptops into dual-USB input controller with both Traktor and Rekordbox ready to go on each.

Is one mac and one PC? Then that's awkward with the path differences between the two

So in that case, what exactly are you syncing…? And what has Rekordbox to do with it, preparation…?

Syncing is the folder containing all the music (actually the iTunes folder tree), plus the full Traktor folder so it syncs track images, cues etc

Rekordbox has nothing to do with Traktor apart from it was synced as well as a backup in case Traktor died on both laptops. Yep, I'm paranoid 😂

I'd not noticed the two different systems, well spotted!! Yeah, that'll cause problems, I've only synced between two PCs

Exactly, he even uses two different OSs.

I’m using MacOS on both, only different storage paths (outside the root folder).

On my MacBook it’s as described above (with all content outside the Traktor install root, but inside the same folder on the same disk), but on my MacStudio I use an external Thunderbolt drive as a media store.

    Traktor Pro (parent dir)

    • - v400 (earliest)
    • - v402 (previous)
    • - v411 (current root)

    External 1 → Traktor files

    • - Recordings
    • - Remix sets
    • - Samples
    • - Stems
    • - Tracks

    • As Traktor stores its preferences and library file inside the (current) Traktor root directory, it seems to me that I can’t sync the installation folder as the configuration files differ (including the absolute paths). So what am I doing wrong, and as the OP also doesn’t seem to get it working properly I guess it has to do with the separation of media files from the Traktor installation itself.
    • So hopefully anyone can share some best practices for syncing between different configurations.

Exclude the configuration files from the sync?

Humm… Google Drive doesn’t allow for that, only Folder level exclusion. Don’t know for Dropbox.

Maybe I should give it a try with using Symbolic Links to the config files and put the actual files outside the install dir, too.

(feeling the same frustration as before, about Traktor still not supporting these kind of setups out of the box)
