Latest s61 MK2 firmware?
Hi All,
I plugged in my s61 MK2 today and it told me that there was a firmware upgrade ready to download. I thought this product was no longer supported by Native Instruments? My kbd reads firmware v0.6.0, and the firmware editor offers update to 0.5.9 (as described by another user in the forums), but the file downloaded with the name "unconfirmed 282774.crdownload" today, date 12/11/24.
This seems out of character for a firmware update and thought to ask the community what this is? Worried that it might be malware or a trojan. Hackers are getting clever these days!
Happy music making everyone.

This was the file in question, now in my bin. Having read about the file extension, crdownload is a placeholder for Chrome to download files. Once the download is complete, the .crdownload becomes the correct extension (.mp3, .dmg etc) and deletes the placeholder.
The update request came up when i plugged in my S61 mk2 via USB to laptop; I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting to repeat the fault but it is not repeating now.
Thanks for responding- I was aware that the S61 mk2 was discontinued so found it suspicious that I was given an option for such an update. If anything develops I will repost here.1

Well, this is strange, there was no firmware update since 2019. This would be the link to the firmware updater: Firmware Updater for Komplete Kontrol S-Series MK2 1.4.0 - Mac
The latest firmware is still 0.5.9 (0.6.0 mans you have an even more recent firmware from the factory).
If you see this message coming up again, could you take a photo or screenshot?

I too had a message appear on my screen informing me there is a firmware update for my KK S61 MK2 keyboard. I didn't get a chance to note the firmware details but if it appears again I'll take a screenshot and post it in this thread.

That's strange. Keeping an eye on the issue and see if there are more reports coming in.

Kontrol S MK2 is still actively supported.
That said, we did not issue a recent firmware update.
I have some other questions:
Did you see this notification on the hardware screen, or your computer screen?
What else were you doing at this time? Was any other software running? e.g. Kontakt, Komplete Kontrol

For me it only appeared once on my computer screen, not on the keyboards screen. I had Komplete Kontrol open as a plugin inside Ableton live suite 12.1 with an Arturia vst synth loaded inside Komplete Kontrol. Windows 11. It's not done it again despite trying to replicate the same scenario. Seems to be a 1 off glitch so far but I'll continue to monitor it and reply here if it happens again.

Do you recall if it definitely mentioned MK2? I wonder if the desktop software mistakenly displayed a notification intended for MK3.

I did that and did not experience anything similar. Which makes me want to ask the question : Have you by any chance installed the "Hardware Connection Service" in Native Access ? Not having an S-Series MK3 setup then I haven't cared to do so and my S61 MK2 appear to functioning just fine without it. Also I am asking in case that that should be the unknown common denominator that Matthew_NI would be looking for.

Yes, it definitely said it was for Komplete Kontrol S61 MK2.
I don't know if the hardware connection service is installed, I can tell you that I've only ever installed anything NI via Native Access so if the MK2 doesn't need that software then I don't have it installed. My MK2 is functioning as it should without issues. I should have mentioned that I have the latest official version of the firmware installed. I've been using my keyboard daily since the message appeared on my computer screen and it hasn't repeated itself so hopefully it was just a glitch.

I don't know if the hardware connection service is installed
It's very easy to check , it will be available to install in Native Access if you do not have it installed :

It's not showing as available in Native Access but if it's something only MK3 keyboards require why would it as I don't have a MK3? I can't find any trace of it on my computer either.

Hmm. Rocking my MKII here and do not see any entries for a Hardware Connection Service within NA. Whether under Available OR Installed.
Maybe it's a Komplete Kontrol v3/MKIII thing only?
That said - I have KK v2.9.6 installed here and I do see an "NIHardwareService" running under Services (Windows 10) - but I do not recall ever installing this separately. Or via Native Access.

Well , I don't know , I am just trying to help here.

If you indeed have it installed then it ought to show in Native Access as an Installed Application

I got that too ("NIHardwareService") running both as a service and as a background process which I think is installed with the MK2 drivers by Komplete Kontrol. I also have no knowledge of why that separate "Hardware Connection Service" app is listed in N.A. other than maybe required for other hardware including the MK3 keyboards of which I have never had one connected. But it is there and I just found it plausible that if it had been installed by people (even if not needing it) then maybe that could account for the experience.
But hey ! As written then I am just trying to help and were just pitching something that I thought worth checking..

No need to go on the defensive my friend, I know you're trying to help and we are grateful for that. Sorry if I'm giving off the wrong impression.
I had already looked in Native Access to see if it was installed and can confirm that it isn't.
Edit
I have something called NI hardware service running in windows services, is this the same thing as hardware connection service?

It is possible that the occurrence of the "Hardware Connection Service" app in Native Access is OS dependent , but maybe Matthew_NI can enlighten us on that , that ought to be something that he is allowed to tell us about (?) I have Windows 11 on my PC at present and alas can not remember if it were also present on my Windows 10 installation.
