Loading more than one multi in a single instance of Kontakt 7?

Is there a way to load more than one multi? In rack view I tried loading them using File → Load and by dragging and dropping them onto blank space, both of which work for adding multiple .nki without the new one replacing the old one… but for multis that's not working. The first multi goes away when the second multi is added. It's extremely annoying. Is the only workaround to open a separate instance of Kontakt on a different track?

Well the principle to have a multi is to have multiple instruments in one instance. If you want to add individual instruments to that multi you can but if you want a whole different multi then yes you need to make a new Kontakt track.

Thanks for answering. But in order to use most Kontakt instruments with MPE controllers in multichannel mode I need to use a multi for each instrument. Usually I want 8 channels so I have to load 8 instances of each instrument. And then I like to layer different instruments. But loading 8 instances and setting each one to a new channel (starting with channel 2) is time-consuming and extremely tedious.

It wouldn't be as much of an issue if Native Instruments implemented better MPE or multichannel support. Really it should be trivial to automate. Very simple AI.

Not used MPE but not sure what the problem is. Set Options>Handling>MIDI channel assignment to 1st free. Doubleclick loads instrument. 8 double-clicks. (Or 9, and delete the first if you want to reserve channel 1)

Thanks for the tip about 1st free, but in Kontakt 7 "doubleclick loads instrument" unfortunately replaces the last instrument instance instead of adding a new instance. So I have to either drag and drop onto a blank space or go up to File / Load every time. I really, really wish Native Instruments at least provided the option to revert to the pre-Kontakt 7 behavior, which was to load a new instance without replacing the previous one.

Might be easier if you minimise the instrument headers (top RH corner) after the first one.
