Kontrol S88 MK3 can be used to control hardware synths without computer connection?

Without either the synth or Kontrol being connected to a computer, can the Kontrol act as a normal MIDI controller for the hardware synth?

I'm thinking of buying the Kontrol but I would like definite confirmation of this point first.

Yes it can, you just need to provide power via a USB C connection coming in to the Mk3, and then MIDI out to your hardware synth. Note: You have to use the MIDI DIN ports for this, I don't think USB MIDI is supported for standalone operation yet(?).

You will need to initially connect it to a computer in order to install the firmware update and register the device, too. The latest firmware allows you to create templates for the knobs and buttons, add/re-arrange pages etc.

I'm not sure whether future units that will ship with the latest firmware are entirely standalone, or if they will require setup/registration via a computer first. I would presume that step will always required, so a computer will be needed somewhere along the line.

The workaround I use is to connect the USB MIDI out to my RME Fireface MIDI in/out using Bidule as a virtual MIDI patchbank. Means not having to disconnect the USB

This is my recommendation for now - using an interface to route MIDI back out of the system.

After all, if MIDI is running into a system, this helps maintain sync with all things.

It is for timing and sync issues that the Kontrol S MK3 is not yet able to send MIDI over both USB and DIN simultaneously just yet.
