Hi,

Any updates on MIDI Templates?

Any news at all would be appreciated. I know it's likely I've missed something, somewhere.

No , probably not. Latest news from Matthew_NI on that as far as I know still is that the team is focusing all strength into getting MIDI Templates and Play Assist finished :

I know they are testing but they should just put out any update.. there will always be bugs from all updates.. addressing needs for mk3 hardware is a must with tho like myself bought day one.. so far I'm extremely disappointed 😞

And you will be even more disappointed if "any update" comes with problems that could have been caught! I'm happy to wait.

Yes, they punted the also long overdue accessibility features to focus on midi templates. Why do you think they had to do this? It’s probably not because things are going well imo. In other words, don’t hold your breath for a release. Projects only get delayed for a handful of reasons and none are good reasons.

Last update being on April 2nd is better than March 2nd. I'll take it (monthly update or something would be nice).

    Just in : Quote Matthew_NI , May 6th , 2024

At ´Duffcat , I had posted elsewhere - we paused Accessibility to focus fully on MIDI Templates, so that we could get it out ASAP. It's pretty much the one team's only focus in May and would hopefully land in beta in that time also.

I almost want to apply for a part-time job here to give NI a hand.

    Thanks for sharing, @PoorFellow

Me too , I would like to be a sidekick to either Hayo_NI or Matthew_NI , but alas people like them don't want or have the time to have poorly educated poor folks like me as sidekicks , so all I could hope for would be to maybe get hired as waterboy 🤣

Not to worry, problem will be solved at the release of Kontrol MK4.

In the mean time we all just need to find alternative solutions.

I have an actual midi controller set up to control Cubase. It's called a Nektar P1. It does 1 job Midi Control.

It's ten years old… and works 100% better the the MK3 as a midi/Daw controller.

Once NI fixes the issue, then I will remove it.

    Nektar saves the day again.

Looks like MIDI Templates will add channel selection. That will be SOOOO useful. It would definitely minimize the size of my orchestral templates.

I love my MK3, but i regret selling my (far more basic) Arturia Essentials which ran all my hardware synths without issue. Rightly, the focus is on integration with existing and future NI VST, but for the flagship MIDI controller to not have the ability to create templates for hardware synths is baffling. The explanation that is was an under used feature is equally baffling. Perhaps I have a skewed perception of how many people use HW synths, but I would have thought anyone putting out this much cash for a MIDI controller is also burning cash on other hardware? Looking forward to MIDI templates "soon"?

No, you don’t have a skewed perception. I believe it was just a lie to begin with, but I am sure that will ruffle the feathers of all the people who seem to be defending this half finished product. I am highly skeptical NI will deliver any midi functionality that matches expectations. It has taken them so long, and they keep punting the date. It suggests to me that there may be larger issues standing in the way.

I think the development priorities appeared to be better integration and stability pieces right now and that caused them to slip dates from what I understand. I own both a S88 MK3 and a S49 MK2, but I've never used templates myself, so I guess I can understand why it wasn't prioritized for first release if there are others like myself. All of my most used features are there in this release of the MK3, but I realize I may not be indicative of general use.

I do appreciate your professionalism in how you responded though. I see this as early days of the MK3 just like it was early days for my Helix Floor unit when I bought it back in 2015. Both the MK3 and the Helix share a lot in common in that the units are both intelligent and programmable, and that's lead to remarkable things in my Helix as I expect to see from the MK3 over the next year or so and beyond.

I’d be happy with single existing template if it was at least partially editable, for example being able to change encoder action from fixed values to relative values (inc/dec).

Unless one only uses Kontakt/KK or only needs to control cutoff and resonance on non-NI virtual instruments. Then it’s fine as it is.

Templates are coming, the controller is usable, and as they say - patience is a virtue 😉
