Leaving NI for not supporting Linux

Sadly after almost a decade of maintaining my software I have to say goodbye. It's not NI though... it's M$. My PC is fast enough to do what I need but this year will no longer be allowed to. As such I am moving my bitwig to Linux and since NI does not support Linux in any fashion I will be forced to say goodbye. A long history of money now wasted because NI chooses to jump on the bandwagon of "you're system is too old, buy more to continue"

A shame really because some of the tripe they made wasn't that bad. At least selling all the hardware I was idiotic enough to buy will make me enough to afford a solution not under contract.

I very much sympathize with you and anybody else for that matter that would like that we did not have to upgrade OS all the time and that more of the software were DRM free. The thing is though that N.I. makes some of their money from selling apps and bundles and their continued income heavily rely on trying to DRM protect their apps and libraries, or at least installation of same, so the idea that N.I. should ever jump the Linux band wagon is rather remote. All those that makes all that nice music apps and libraries wants to get paid and the money got to come from somewhere.

Also as a general observation then as long as so much of what is made software wise is driven by intellectual property protected technologies then I do not think that any of that is going to change any time soon. E.g. computer games would have to stop being made using DirectX and start being made solely using open-source cross-platform technologies !

I wouldn't worry too much about this poster moving on. He obviously has some serious money problems to deal with as he could only afford to make one post on this forum.

Good catch! ...and also, one visit to the forum only... the same day he wrote the post, and he never came back...

Really, this seems to be quiet common among some new users, they come just to complain (or worst) and they never return again!

So, new criteria, before answering older questions, check the OP's profile first, otherwise you're likely most possibly to talking to the wind, rather than to someone who will ever read your response... 😋

It's the usual pro Linux crowd. The spec of a spec of dust in the multimedia world. If you go with Linux that has proven to be a failure in the retail world, meaning sales of systems and software to the average joe, you are reverting back to trying to use a DAW 20 years ago. I've heard the (yawn) arguments but it's like being Charlie Brown waiting for the great pumpkin.

Going to Linux is to get back at the man called Microsoft. MS also works making as much hardware work because their source of income is from businesses that don't upgrade their expensive hardware.

I guess if you want to be primitive and be hip and cool and bopping the man the Linux is for you. I doubt the user is running high end audio interfaces which would be pricey doorstops.

I wonder how many other developers are on that goodbye list. That's a lot of them. Maybe the goodbye was #231 out of #400.

Not all customers are created equal regardless of how long they've been an NI customer or a poster on this forum. I'm willing to help anyone if I can, but I'm not prone to helping someone whining and complaining about how bad NI and it's software is when they can't even get it configured and running correctly regardless of how long they've been a customer.

I've only been a big user of NI stuff for about 3 years or so, but I know how to run it, configure it and make it work and I have very few problems with any updates or upgrades to my system whether it's NI hardware or software. That's because the first one I doubt when I run into a problem isn't NI, it's me asking what am I missing or not understanding here, then doing my homework reading the manuals or watching YT videos to make sure I'm doing things right rather than come on here and blame everyone else for my deficiencies.

I don't think that DunedinDragon wrote what he wrote 'just to make fun of others'. But of course , while DunedinDragon has a point which to me is 'Do your homework' (if not RT¤M !) then of course also LostInFoundation got a point that not all are equally tech savvy. Only a couple of weeks ago someone brought a computer to my residence for a fix of a software problem, the user had a rather annoying problem with an email program ! I opened the application and did one click and problem gone ! I mean for me so very obvious but I see and use so much software and have a skill set that the other person do not. There is a lot of research going into e.g. user interfaces and designs of things which is great , however that does not mean that everything is equally easy to use for everyone and it does not mean that stuff is actually always that well thought through !

    I do not agree.

If someone asks a question but never return to see the answers, for me it is the very definition of disrespectful.

Of course, in general you don't have to be frequently here (or anywhere else). But, from the moment you ask something, then yes, you have the obligation to be here!

It is a simple matter of basic ethics and behavior. And, at the end of the day, i can never respect someone who does not respect my effort and time and make me feel like a fool.

and btw, "customer since 2018" doesn't say anything to me... There are customers going back to 2001 (!) and still in the forum, but this says only that, this person bought something back in 2001 (or 2018)... could be just one piece of the cheapest software and nothing else all those years... so, what? 😛

...or the opposite, someone else are just a 6 months customer but he bought the entire NI catalogue!

So, who is more "valuable", the one from 2001 and the one-time cheap purchase plus 3 complaining forum comments? or the one from 2023 and the "entire NI products" collection, plus 100 useful forum comments???

And where should that asked question that required your effort and time be?

What I see is an user that wanted to express his opinion (which doesn’t imply no other obligations), some others that deliberately decided on their own to comment on it (making fun of him) and no sign of disrespect at all (at least coming from OP).

Sorry, but it’s quite funny to invoke ethics and behavior in a case like this one…

Yes, you are right about this specific case, but i was talking in general, since i have encountered this annoying "phenomenon" frequently: People asking questions and then disappear or, they get answers but they never respond back, though they are active on other posts!

    So, let's re-summarize the case:

A user (probably a former user) appears a month ago and say "Goodbye NI" (obviously, it is not a question). Then he is gone and never came back to the forum (so far).

A month later, a lot of other members suddenly discover this thread and start pointless debates (myself included), crossing swords and spears over rights and wrongs and morals, about an hypothetical case of someone that he is most probably totally unaware of this debate (and most probably, he wouldn't even care to read or participate). Our weapons also includes "vote-ups", "vote downs" and "funny".

...a nice way to spend our time, indeed! 😂

The whole “vote down” thing is a nice way to spend our time…

I will probably never use it…I find it so useless…If you agree with something, a vote up can suffice, no need for anything else…but if you don’t agree with someone, you tell him and explain why…so he can also further explain his reasoning…and maybe both can learn something.

And the vote down is so often used in a childish way…

Yes…definitely a bad introduction to the forum

I would definitely agree that the vote down is not being used entirely as intended. I've seen people vote stuff down because they didn't like the answer even though the answer was correct. Some people seem to take their frustration with NI out on people that are trying to help them. But perhaps they simply don't understand, who knows.

As far as this "Goodbye NI" well that's a trend that goes beyond NI, and probably has more to do with psychology.

Quote : "I would definitely agree that the vote down is not being used entirely as intended."

I wrote/told as much while the implementation were being discussed that the up-vote/down-vote is always being abused. People tend to use especially the down-vote as a tool to express/relieve negative emotions even when , as you wrote yourself : "they didn't like the answer even though the answer was correct.". But nobody were really interested in my opinion back then !
