Creating User MIDI Template with S61 mk3 and Komplete Kontrol 3.0.0

To win in a competitive arena, you sometimes need to see beyond what the others are doing.
It's more than doing the same thing "better".

On that, we will have to agree to disagree 👍

NI is squandering an opportunity with NKS2... Something that their competition can't come close to offering.
NKS2 is NI's best bet to pull in new buyers of their keyboard controllers vs others.
They need to pull out all the stops to get as many 3rd party products prepped for this as possible and working in KK3.
Spending big $$ to make this happen ASAP is crucial.

Early in this thread @Tim_NI said the following with regards to the new keyboards and NKS2:
Along the same lines, we are in discussions with our friends at the major DAW manufacturers to extend integration to built-in DAW Instruments and integrate more deeply with the DAWs.
Using NKS2 for the integration of the built-in instruments (and signal processing) of the major DAWS would be a rocket ship for S-Mk3 controller sales.
MIDI templates are all well and good... BUT, making the "need" for it less and less by going gang-busters with NKS2 adoption would be what sets NI apart from the others.

There are certain foundational essentials and there are accelerants.
At launch we had a balance of both, then post launch we're focused on building in more of the former, in response to user requests, and as the year progresses, we'll be focussing on more of the latter.

So what exactly CAN you do with the default midi template on the MK3? I see there are two pages...is that a second midi template and each can be customized? light guide, change cc, etc.? like on the MK2?
I that you can't create templates currently, but can you do everything you would expect on the default template pictured below?

It’s not a second template, it’s just more CCs on second page. At the moment, the template is 100% non-editable (including its name), it’s just what NI put there, you can’t change CCs or anything else. You can midi-teach your software and/or hardware to use those that are provided.
You can change the colour and brightness of light guide (or switch it off completely) in settings on hardware - this is not a part of MIDI template (as of now), just global setting for the controller.

This is what exists currently until the on-device editor ships.

Glad to hear that editing templates, either on device or through KK, is coming. I used my Kontrol MK2 to control external hardware through Ableton. Having this functionality missing on day 1 was extremely disappointing and is a source of huge inconvenience for me. The NKS integrations are a nice to have, but for me, the templates are a must have. Having to use work arounds is not cool. I will think twice about future Kontrol keyboards because of this, and in fact would have returned the S61 MK3 had it not been impossible to do so.

Any update on timeframe for on-device MIDI template editor for Kontrol MK3?

@Matthew_NI hey there, any news you can share regarding MIDI templates?
I live the board so far but MIDI templates will really make this the star of my studio!
edit: lol, somehow didn’t see the post above until after I posted

Just got ahold of an S61MK3 today... I'm completely new to NI hardware. And boy am I disappointed. Really hope that midi template editor is on the horizon. Also would like some other basic things to work like plugin parameters not being just a blank list when editing controls etc. in KK.

Supposedly they will be in beta in April.
there is a “roadmap” post in the forum with lots of info. Check there for full details.
A lot of folks are a bit sour on the lack of Midi and it is a bit surprising they would release the keyboard with nearly zero ext midi capabilities (wish we could edit the current template) but it is what it is.
However, it’s an amazing setup for controlling Kontakt (though kontakt can have its own issues… I’ve certainly had some). Especially as we still can’t really resize Kontakt’s interface (also surprising in 2024)
If Midi control is your main objective, return it if you can and buy again when/if they arrive. Doesn’t make sense to give NI money for something you can’t use the way you need.

Thanks, Prokat99 I hadn't seen that.

Yes it’s disappointing about this Midi mapping not being available after spending 1,300$ on a keyboard that makes no sound unless connected to a vst and can't even midi map it Jesus. Glad I still have my MK 2 keyboard now I have to use 2 keyboards to do one task
