[FIXED BY LOGIC 10.8.1] MIDI note doubling issue with Komplete Kontrol 3.0.3 and Logic Pro 10.8
Hi all, Matt H here!
Returning to the fray with an important PSA.
Situation
Apple just announced Logic Pro 10.8. We found out the same time y'all did. It solved some KK3 setup issues on their end, but introduced some unexpected changes.
Issues / Changes
- When using KK3 (3.0.0, 3.0.1, 3.0.2 or 3.03) with Logic Pro 10.8, all MIDI notes are doubled. This issue reproduces with all MIDI controllers when using KK3. In other words, it is specific to KK3, and not to the Kontrol S MK3. This bug has been filed as a high priority, as soon as it was reported to us. We hope to fix it this month. Incredibly frustrating for all - I will keep you in the loop as this progresses.
- It appears Logic Pro 10.8 has silently introduced support for MIDI out from AU2 plug-ins. The impact of this is mostly positive: for instance, this means it is now possible for Komplete Kontrol's arpeggiator to send MIDI out of the plug-in, and into your timeline. This benefits all users of KK3 and Logic. At present, the value is limited due to the first issue.
I suspect that the introduction of #2 had an unintended effect on #1. Either way, we're looking into this and I wanted to start an official thread on the topic.

Logic 10.8.1 was released yesterday and it seems that it fixes the issue: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203718

Thanks Matt, yeah it's potentially a step in the right direction, if in the short term it has a negative side effect.
However, only Logic has (had) that limitation on recording midi from plugins that produce it. So how come KK doesn't record double MIDI notes in other hosts that don't have that limitation?

If we knew that - we'd already have solved the bug. It was filed today, so we will start looking into it this week.

Exactly - so I was thinking that might be a clue

It might be of value to know that (for me anyway) the note that is pressed on the keyboard is the one that is doubled. The other notes created by the Harmoniser/Chord/Arp or Midi FX Plugin (such as Obelisk) are NOT doubled.

That's because Logic is getting the note information from the keyboard & Komplete Kontrol when you press a key, but only from Komplete Kontrol for the additional notes created by Play Assist
Same would be true even if you were using the Querty keyboard MIDI if it is going through the KK plugin

That puzzles me. In that case why is the issue a new one?

Because it’s only the new Logic 10.8 update that enables Logic to capture MIDI outputs from AU plugins (but Apple didn’t let anyone know in advance to prepare for it)

Ok - slowly got it!!! 😀

@Matthew_NI Thanks for addressing this so quickly.
I'm experiencing the same issue in KK 2.9.6 (R0) software (having downgraded from KK 3.0.2 at the weekend, not sure if that's significant) using my Kontrol S61 Mk2 controller.

That raises another dumb question from me then!! Just AU plugins? If I load a VST3 as per attached screenshot I get the same.

Komplete Kontrol is the AU
But ultimately this is a cool thing, people have been wanting to be able to capture the MIDI output from Play Assist in Logic for years, for example I just used it to record a baseline for ESM. NI just need to fix the doubling that is happening as a side effect of this change.

Yeah I think that's not entirely surprising, this is a Logic 10.8 issue but KK2.9 also outputs MIDI so I think we should not expect this just to have an impact on KK3 (which naturally raises a question, will NI also fix it in KK2.9x?). Obviously this was an unexpected development :)

So does this mean if I play a KK3 instrument using a different midi controller (say, for example, my Arturia KeyLab Essential MK3 49), I will not see then doubling note effect in Logic 10.8?
For the record, I have lot updated Logic yet, because I’ve already gone through hell with trying to get my new Kontrol MK3 S61 running.

Thanks and agreed!

No the keyboard is irrelevant, the problem is with the Komplete Kontrol AU but it is not so much a bug as Logic 10.8 has changed something fundamental about how AUs handle MIDI so KK needs to be changed to adapt to that
