Real-Time Stem separation ? (Acapella / Instrumental)

Hi everyone,

I've been a Traktor user since 2013, and I've always been loyal to the brand.

However, last night at an event, I saw Serato DJ Pro's real-time Isolation feature in action. It allowed the DJ to isolate vocals or instrumentals on the fly during a DJ set, creating incredibly clean mixes with absolutely no slowdown or lag.

Do you think this feature will be included in the next Traktor software update? If so, do you have any idea when? I'm currently using version 4.5.0.7.

Or, now that Traktor has been acquired by inMusic, is there little hope of seeing this feature implemented, and should I seriously start considering switching to Serato (which is honestly the last thing I want to do)?

Where have you been? 🤣 Atomix and Algoriddim introducted real time stem separation over six years ago. Serato didn't do it until late 2022. If you're considering switching, Serato is not the only option.

Hi thanks for your answer, I was aware of those updates, but I always thought they worked in a similar way to Traktor's current Stems implementation, requiring you to pre-process each track individually before using it, rather than separating vocals and instrumentals in real time directly from the track while DJing, as Serato does.

As I mentioned, I'd really prefer not to switch software, as I've been using Traktor for over 10 years.

So, my question is: is there any plan to introduce real-time Stem separation in Traktor, as described in the title of this thread?

Thanks lord-carlos for your reply. So, are you saying that there won't be any more updates after InMusic? The fact that the S4 controller is no longer available for sale already makes me think that this is the direction things are heading.

Hi Merve, what do you mean by suspicious? I was in the DJ booth with him during a friend's DJ set, and I can confirm that everything was running smoothly.

No? Not at all what I'm saying. I'm just saying that Traktor team almost never says what they are working on.

And what they are working on has a rather slow progress.

And even if they would say what they are working on, it can't really be trusted. Or at least not their time line. I think 5 years ago light skin and high dpi was "in progress"

Fast stem separation is proven technology and runs on the GPU. Why do you think it would slow down the dj program in any noticeable way?

In fact over Apple devices (desktop or mobile) after iPhone X, Neural Engine (dedicated AI processor part) was implemented. Usually called BionicAI. It’s not just “running on the GPU”, it’s dedicated part of the SoC.

That’s the reason why Djay could do realtime stems over a mobile platform meanwhile the side to side competitor (Virtual Dj) required a computer (but at least it worked in my oldie late12 mac mini…)

Serato was a laggard* and Traktor has its own path with iZotope now, m4u stem file container before… etc. Since now it’s part of inMusic, common sense says “merge improvements”. We can expect some realtime stems with less quality and offline with top quality in all the products so Traktor but also Denon.

Thanks Dubalab, that's an interesting perspective, and I certainly hope you're right about the potential benefits of the inMusic acquisition.

However, I think we're still talking about possibilities rather than actual plans or confirmed developments.

To be clear, I'm not questioning whether real-time stem separation is technically possible, nor am I particularly concerned about the hardware requirements. Other DJ platforms have already demonstrated that it can work very well.

My only question is whether Native Instruments actually plans to introduce real-time vocal/instrumental separation directly into Traktor, without having to pre-process tracks beforehand.

I've been using Traktor since 2013 and genuinely don't want to switch to another platform. But if this feature isn't on the roadmap, I'd rather know sooner than later than keep waiting for something that may never happen.

I understand that nobody here may have access to that information, but hopefully someone from the Traktor team or inMusic can eventually give us a clearer indication of their intentions.

Yeah, but they will not say.

It's how they roll. And like I said before, even IF they would say it's on the roadmap it could be years in the making. If you want fast stem separation switch.

Thanks Carlos, Actually I remember reading that real-time stem separation had been on Traktor's roadmap for quite some time, which is why I was hoping there might finally be some official news or confirmation about it.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
