Hi Native Instruments team,
I would like to suggest a concept for the future of Kontakt: an AI-powered performance engine designed to make existing sampled instruments perform MIDI more naturally and intelligently.
The idea is NOT to turn Kontakt into a text-to-music generator and NOT to replace real sampled instruments with AI-generated audio.
Instead, the AI would act as an intelligent virtual musician.
The user would load a Kontakt instrument, provide their own MIDI performance, and the AI would analyze the musical context and automatically control how that MIDI should be performed using the capabilities of the loaded library.
For example:
• A solo violin could automatically use appropriate legato transitions, bowing, vibrato, dynamics, expression and articulations.
• An orchestral string section could intelligently manage articulation changes, dynamics, phrasing and realistic ensemble behavior.
• A guitar library could automatically choose appropriate picking techniques, slides, legato, muting, velocity behavior and other playing techniques.
• A percussion library could interpret MIDI with realistic accents, dynamics, sticking, timing and humanization.
• An ethnic instrument could use culturally appropriate phrasing, ornaments, articulations and performance techniques. For example, an Arabic violin could interpret MIDI with authentic maqam-style phrasing, slides and ornaments.
The important concept is:
THE AI DOES NOT GENERATE THE AUDIO.
The actual sound still comes from the REAL multi-sampled Kontakt library.
AI controls HOW the instrument performs the composer's MIDI.
The system could intelligently control:
• Key switches and articulations
• Legato transitions
• Dynamics and velocity
• Expression
• Vibrato
• Portamento and slides
• Ornaments and grace notes
• Timing and humanization
• Phrase shaping
• Instrument-specific playing techniques
There could also be different levels of AI control:
- PERFORMANCE ONLY
The original MIDI notes remain completely unchanged. AI controls only articulations, dynamics, expression, timing and performance. - PERFORMANCE ASSIST
AI can make subtle musical adjustments to timing, velocity, ornaments and phrasing while preserving the original composition. - CREATIVE PERFORMANCE
AI can suggest alternative interpretations, articulations and phrasing, while the composer remains in control of the musical material.
This could dramatically reduce one of the most time-consuming parts of working with sophisticated sample libraries: manually programming key switches, articulations, CC automation, expression, dynamics and detailed MIDI humanization.
Kontakt already provides access to extremely detailed sampled instruments.
AI could make those instruments behave more like intelligent virtual musicians, without sacrificing the realism and audio quality of real sample libraries.
In simple terms:
Composer creates the MIDI.
Kontakt provides the real sampled instrument.
AI becomes the performer.
Real samples.
Intelligent performance.
Full MIDI control.
No AI-generated audio required.
I think this could be a very interesting direction for the future of Kontakt, and I would be interested to hear what the Native Instruments team and other Kontakt users think about the concept.
Best regards,
