Kontakt 8 update painfully slow install

Latest versions of Kontakt 8 are incredibly slow installing the downloaded update. Frankly speaking, can't believe how is possible in 2026: version 8.11.1 takes 30 minutes on a 13th Gen i7-13700 with 32GB Ram, 8TB harddisk with lot of free space, Windows 11 Pro! Yes, 30 minutes!!!😱. It seems they do not test what they deliver; since I work in IT as a developer, I would like to meet the developers of Native Instruments and check with them the source code to fix this strongly annoying behaviour, I hope few hints should help.

Took 2:07 here - from me clicking Update to the item being installed and Native Access refreshing.

This is all about your Internet (hope you are not on wi-fi) - OR your AV is scanning with entire archive the whole time while it's installing

It's not internet, I wrote "the downloaded Kontakt update", sorry you are missing this. I focus on the install process only.
And let's say for a moment could be my AV, but do you think it's something unexpected on a computer having an AV? It's something that should not be tested or imagined at all?
Further, it's not the only application I installed and updated, and no other application takes so long. BTW I have Norton Antivirus, and sound folders are configured as exceptions in the AV scanning.
Any other useful answers?

I installed it too, and it also did not take 30 minutes. It was more than Vocalpoint though, maybe 5 minutes.

Yes - ditch Norton. Fast.

AND testing AVs? Do you really think NI is installing Norton (or any other AV) in their Q&A labs and performing deep testing against that?

Not sure what else to tell you - v8.11.1 here took 2 mins and 7 seconds this morning. From initial download to install - all in.

My DAW uses Windows Defender (and only Defender) - and it is locked out (by policy) of doing any real time scanning whatsoever - while I am working.

I even had time to copy the installer to my software share while it was installing.

Others (like PK) have already chimed in - this is not a long install at any time under normal conditions.

If yours took 30 minutes - there is something else going on - specific to your machine.

To close - if everyone out there was experiencing a half hour install for Kontakt 8 (released in Sept 2024) - pretty sure that we would have heard about that in one long giant ugly thread by now.

Dear @Vocalpoint , your first answer was triggered by a subset of keywords, forgetting "install only, not download"; your second answer was triggered again by a subset of keywords, forgetting "directories containing sounds are excluded by scanning".

But let's say Norton is part of the game, even if in my experience this only happens with Kontakt (and I have many many software installed); the point it's not exactly the specific antivirus, but the way the application is behaving. In software programming, there are many different ways to do the same thing, and if Norton is part of the game, maybe the install of Kontakt (and only Kontakt) is behaving in a way that triggers an antivirus: some file system or memory probing is done in a suspicious way…
Anyway, from a practical point of view, it's not needed to test with all available antiviruses on the planet, probably picking the top 5 antivirus on the market is enough, and testing 5 installs should not take a lot of time (maybe less than 1 hour), expecially if this is beneficial to user experience.

Bottom line, I understand that @Vocalpoint is suggesting to have your DAW computer with a low security level, defined by a rule of thumb, just in order to install Kontakt… Nice.

I am not “suggesting” anything.

If you want Norton scanning everything - all the time - in the spirit of “security” - that is your choice.

But you are getting a bit dramatic by making it sound like - as a DAW user - I should have full AV grinding away while I surf the “dark web”?

Been using Windows since 1993 and have never seen even the slightest hint of anything malicious on any machine - ever. You think I would have seen something in 33 years.

Desktop security is way overblown . Here in 2026 - a well tuned machine only ever needs Win Defender (with policies) and nothing more.

Anyway - your specific issue here needs pro level assist as there is no one here that can reproduce your issue.

Suggest you reach out to NI support and get a ticket started.

Real time scanning (via any AV) - examines everything - all the time.

As soon as any installer executable fires up - all of it's processes, file payloads, copy routines, registry additons - anything that is happening - while that installer is running - is being scanned.

The bigger the install - the more the scanning. The more the scanning - the longer it takes.

That said - if your install is really taking 30 minutes by the clock - you have something more serious going on - that is far beyond AV.

You need NI support to dig into this.

I have to deactivate my F-Secure based AV every time I need to install a Kontakt update and KOmplete Kontrol update and more.

The AV claims that the installers is doing some self-copying while installing which the AV do not like and takes as malware behavior. I am not happy that I have to disable the AV but NI has not changed how the installers behaves (or have it whitelisted by the AV for that matter) even though it has been reported a number of times.

Soon my computer it's either that or a no installation.
