Are Play Series instruments fully editable in full Kontakt 8?

I've seen many new libs lately where the little wrench icon is not available. I had my eye on a few of the Play Instruments but unless they're editable…

It begs the Q: why own the full version of Kontakt if you can't have full control over the same libs/instruments?

Owning the "full" version of Kontakt has never meant we have unimpeded access to mangle every library out there.

The availability of the "wrench" depends on the vendor creating the library, whether that instrument has capabilities to be edited and - the big one - if the vendor decides to "allow" us to edit - by making the wrench available in the first place.

Thousands of commerical libraries are locked down for obvious reasons. The vendor does not want us poking around in there.

As mentioned by Poorfellow - the "full" version allows me to load (and potentially edit) libraries that cannot be loaded in Player - AND let's not forget the big elephant in the room - the "full" version allows me the full toolkit to create my own libraries - and then sell them to you.

It's funny…I don't know if this is just lost on NI or an intentional marketing diversion but the "benefits" above mean so, so little to me. (do producers really care if a lib is loadable from the library browser? We have an elegant operating system with a comprehensive file browser…)

The elephant in the room is that those unlicensed libraries are editable.

Thanks @Vocalpoint. In context of this product, I think it's important to draw a distinction between "music maker" and "instrument developer". If the full version was intended as a development platform, I'd be agreeing with you. But it's being presented as a "full-featured" workhorse for music producers—when in fact, it has no more functionality than the player version if the library is locked. At that point they're both just Romplers.

I've developed sound libs for Kontakt, so I understand where instrument makers are coming from. Personally I don't believe in locking out users from using my samples any way they want—particularly if I'm creating an "unlicensed instrument" (ouch!) that requires the flagship version of Kontakt. That's the compact between developer and user.

It used to be that owning the full version meant control over the guts of an instrument—real music making. As I see it, NI's continued rationale for owning the full version of Kontakt has lost any meaning.

It's true, the vendor doesn't have to "allow" anything. So producers like me won't buy many of them and opt instead to buy or find our own sample packs and use the Kontakt engine to create our own fully editable instruments. I'm literally doing this now. The irony.

Kontakt full is many things to different people.

For instance, it is a development platform to some.

And to others, a way to load content developed by others.

That content is the intellectual property of whoever developed it. If they choose to restrict access to the underlying audio data and code behind the product, that is their prerogative.

You wouldn't expect to access the source code of another plug-in; this is no different.

If the above was (is?) "your idea' of what a full version of Kontakt should bring to the table - I guess I must have missed a memo.

Been using Kontakt since v2 - and never has it ever allowed me "full control over the guts of any instrument" - at least with the libraries I have purchased over the years (and there have been hundreds).

Yes - in some VERY specific cases - I was/am able to do "some" things due to having Full - and in others - I am able to do nothing.

Almost sounds like your impression of owning "full" is drastically different from it's true purposes - which have been well notated above. And have been this way for years now.
