Serum 2 Crashes Komplete Kontrol

In the KK standalone, when loading Serum 2 it throws an error and crashes KK:

Serum had a recent update, but the odd thing is it only crashes the standalone KK. In Cubase 15, with KK as a vst, Serum 2 runs fine (hosted inside KK).

Yesterday in the KK standalone when scanning plugins it threw a bunch of those memory errors, randomly, but nothing happened. Today when running Serum 2 in KK in Cubase, it updated the content tags. Ok, but then trying to run it in the KK standalone it doesn't throw the memory error now but crashes silently.

I've reinstalled KK, rescanned plugins and the library. Did a cmd scan now and the three dism operations (everything looks good). I will force update my graphics driver from nvidia. Other than that I'm running out of fixes.

Can I ask - why would you need to run Serum 2 via KK?

It is not a supported NKS instrument and was probably not even tested within KK.

Can't even think of a reason why any non-NKS instrument would be tested within KK

Ten times easier to simply run it on it's own.

Serum doesn't have its own standalone. Komplete Kontrol is my vst host of choice.
There isn't any NKS but I'm looking at the paid versions. That might be useful. I have a custom MIDI setup already for Serum's knobs. I want to go through the Serum presets for a while and I don't need a daw for that. I could just run it in cubase but I don't need serious issues like this just hanging around either. Who knows when it's going to come and bite me. I did something wrong to my computer and I have to fix it.

To control it of course - KK can be used with almost any plugin instrument and most effects too (which is the whole point of having a NKS user library which is expressly for non official NKS plugins).

Anyway Serum 2 usually works very well in KK, I made my own template for it and all presets also import well.

Not getting crashes on my Mac, maybe a Windows thing or even something more specific to your system or what you were doing?

Understood.

However - that does not mean that every VSTi ever created was tested "inside" KK.

Nor does it mean that just because KK supports VST instruments (in general) - that every instrument out there is going to work flawlessly.

The OP's issue does look environmental (to me) to his machine but now that I understand the use case - I can see why he would need to drop it into KK.

Yup it's definitely on my end. I tried to just fix it myself but I'm out of ideas.
Did you update Serum 2 to 2.1.4? It came out like a few days ago.

What I did is clean up a bunch of old music stuff I don't need any more. And made sure they are never coming back, if you know what I mean.

The NI mods already gave me crap for running registry tools. 😅 They're not wrong but neither am I. I know what I did wrong now, but my computer is still punishing me for it.

Updated my graphics driver.

On scanning plugins KK is still throwing errors, but Serum 2 is loading now.
I had the feeling it was graphical; Serum 2 isn't respecting any skin changes. The ones in my list might be old ones for Serum 1. If I had left the skin set to an incompatible Serum 1 skin and closed Serum 2, then that could be what was silently crashing KK standalone.

So it's working now, thanks for the help.

It should work fine, if you are referring to the NKS library I provide here it HAS been tested on both PC and Mac (as most of the libraries I provide are tested and developed on these platforms to ensure they work)

If there are issues just get in touch. If the issue is plugin related I can at least update my version and test but not much I can do about plugin issues specifically but if it happens only when launching a preset then I can investigate more into what is happening. Sometimes developers mess up an update and make it incompatible with past saved preset data. In some cases a plugin update is required to fix, Spectrasonics had an issue in Omnisphere 3 when it released, Omnisphere 2 presets using Host Automation maps would cause it to freeze but they were quick to resolve the problem. There are some cases tho presets for a plugin have to be completely resaved using the latest version which I can do and migrate all the tagging over from the old library to the new so it's not always a case of "your fault" but I have no reports of issues,

Yes, that's the one. Your post somewhere else made me go look at it. I haven't got it yet but probably will. I think the issue was my outdated graphics driver and Serum 1 skins being applied to Serum 2. Otherwise it seems to be working now, thanks for the help.

The thing about Serum 2, is it has its own preset browser. This particular browser has a full five star rating system, comments etc. But it has the weakness of being proprietary (as far as I can tell).

I'm not sure yet how I'm going to do this. Cubase has its proprietary media bay, NI has NKS and Serum has its own browser. For plugins like Massive and Serum I might do a redundant three-library preset system. Every preset will end up with a user rating for KK, Cubase and the plugin's internal browser. The platforms don't talk to each other so I will have to manually process the preset in all three, for circumstantial benefit. (Give the preset a rating in all three places.) I'm not sure yet if the extra work will be worth it though.

I have this same problem with samples and that my file manager and Cubase don't get along. Nobody wants to make a universal audio file container for some reason.

Sounds like the all too common 1st world problem of too much content and the struggle to manage it.

The issue is every plugin will have its own way of browsing, its own tagging and rating system and that is the whole idea of KK, to make a single standard browser for preset sounds.

I use KK as my goto for all my plugin sounds however I use Ableton Live and I don't bother with the star system in KK or any other plugins, instead I load my sounds via KK and when I find a sound I really like and want to find for future, I save that as an Ableton Instrument Rack within the custom user folders I have created for all my fave sounds.

For sample files I use just the Ableton sample browser for the most part however I also have a separate sample browser "BaseHead" that I can open on a second screen and just send files into ableton, it has full metadata and tagging ability for sound files which I also use for populating all my field recordings.

Cubase should support IXML within containers such as WAV )riff) and FLAC. IXML is a metadata standard used by many pro software design tools which is what Basehead manages and it can store all the extended metadata, thumb image, markers eetc. Wavelab (which I also use) reads and writes this data so I can create markers and loop regions which can then be read by DAWs when the file is loaded automatically. There are other tools but I am biased as I use to work for Basehead and love the application.

That has a nice shiny reinstall button on native access, but doesn't actually reinstall everything cause reasons.

…Basehead looks pretty good.
Wavelab writes a riff chunk to .wav. And a id3 for the rating column. Cubase and Directory Opus both had issues with it (Although I can leave Dopus out of the conversation). None of what one program writes is seen by the other program. Even though .wav apparently isn't the best choice for metadata. I almost converted my samples to flac or ogg, but they also have compatibility issues themselves. (wavelab doesn't even have a ratings field for flac.)So I wish there was a universal sample container so the files can carry their own metadata and it would be universal. Kind of like a cd that you can play in any cd player. A universal preset container would be nice too but let's start with basics here. Like back in the year 1980 basics. Baby steps amiright.

Universal metadata is really hard to come by. I have sononym, because of its similarity search. And that has its own proprietary metadata database too. And Cubase's media bay doesn't write to files either. I just can't win. The files are right there, with metadata fields ready to go, but no it all has to be proprietary.

I'm just gonna go play video games. Computer programmers always ruin my motivation to make music. I can't stand it.

So I am not sure how I am supposed to open Serum 2 version 2.1.4 , but I just downloaded the demo and installed it on My Windows 11 PC and then added it via the VST3 browsing inside standalone Komplete Kontrol 3.5.3 and that works just fine here :

And works just as fine Inside KK plugin in Ableton Live :
