The Grandeur & reverb

The Grandeur has built in convolution reverb. It allows to increase/decrease amount, size, distance, and has different impulse response files. From what I read about reverbs - convolution is the best for creating natural "space" around an instrument. So it looks like in my case (solo piano compositions) I already have everything I need.

But. (there is always some "but", I don't know if it's just me 😀)

I have Aurora, Neoverb and Equinox. With that catchy "unmask" idea - no mud, just reverb. So my question - do I want just to use built in reverb and to be happy, or those "unmask" idea is a real thing?

Actually 2 questions. The first one is - does external reverb with unmasking feature will really make my tracks sound better? And the second question (if yes) - what learning path should I choose? Equinox? (I understand that it's the hardest from 3 to learn, but it gives the greatest control/possibilities when master it ). Or it's overkill for solo piano and Aurora or Neoverb will make the job done?

Hello,

there is no definitive answer to that, you can just try. It depends on the tracks density and so on. But in your case I would prefer an external reverb as send fx where I can at least apply EQ to the reverb in amd output, and of course try a bit unmasking and compare it with and without. Then listen for the feeling if that makes sense, maybe with some fresh ears after a few hours if you can. Cause we can very quickly get used to a sound and if we hear it later again it sounds different. Also comparing to a track that sounds similar to what you want can help.

Thanks! Yes, I forgot to mention reverb EQing. So I guess my first Q has the easy answer - external reverb.

What about the second question? From tutorials it looks like Aurora & Neoverb can do EQ filtering (Neoverb even in & out) & unmasking and way easier to learn than equinox.

That I can't answer unfortunately, I own those reverbs too but haven't used them much so far, they are all great for sure.

So i played around with all three and i think neoverb is an excellent device for your purpose, it also has some knobs under the hood if you want to go deeper and edit everything to your liking. But if you own the RC24 and\or the RC48 reverb try this on piano, those plugins maybe don´t look like much but they sound amazing in my opinion, and you can load eq\compression\whatever before and after this plugins as you need.

@Uwe303 I see that I can download demo of RC24/RC48. Two quick questions. what is the difference between those 2? it looks like the second one is more advanced version of the first. like "HD" and "Tru HD" )

and what is "demo" - it works say a week and stops working? or it lasts forever, but turns off every 30 secs or something like that?

There is also both product description and manual download on the pages for the RC24 and the RC48 .

Demo limitations ? A manual found on the PluginAlliance site suggests the following :

As long as your NI product has not been activated, it will run in Demo mode with limited
functionality.

In Demo mode you can save your own presets but you cannot recall them! You will be able
to load user presets once you have activated your effect (see section ↑2.2, Activating
RC 48 for more on this).

Otherwise then : It is free to try and find out for yourself.

Guys, I tried RC24/48. They create beautiful tails (late reflections). I like them a lot.

But. (😁) As I understand it needs early reflections to create "space". And a ratio early reflections/late reflections should be about 80-90%/10-20%, so the feel of a room/hall appeared, but no boomy/muddy room resonance. Is that right?

RCs don't have early/ late reflections ratio slider? Or I didn't notice it yet?

That will be funny if in the end I will have to use Logic Pro stock rever because it has early/ late reflections ratio slider. 🤣

I am not sure if I understand enough if RC48 and it's echo settings to tell if that applies. However based on your general writing and level of expectations then I think that you should most likely take a look at NeoVerb or Equinox.

Neoverb manual says in section Neoverb Overview that :

The innovative Blend Pad interface chooses any proportion of three different reverb engines, and mixes them into one sound. The first Reverb engine generates early reflections. Reverb 2 generates reverb tails for either Room, Medium Chamber, or Plate reverb sounds, while Reverb 3 generates reverb tails for Large Chamber or Hall reverb sounds.

Equinox manual page 12 and 13 shows the "Early Panel" and the Advanced Controls .

Early panel
The Early lets you adjust the early reflections. It contains the following controls:
• Early Attack: Adjusts the angle of attack of the early reflections. At lower values the earliest
reflections are stronger. At higher values the latest reflections are stronger.
• LP Filter (Low-Pass Filter): Adjusts a low-pass filter applied to the later part of the early
reflections.
• Width: Controls the width of the early reflections. Be sure to check for mono compatibility for
higher values.
• Early Time: Adjusts the duration of the early reflections (in milliseconds), which are spread out
over this time.

• Advanced Controls button (three-fader icon): Shows or hides the panel’s advanced controls.
Advanced controls
When the Advanced Controls button is active, the Early panel extends and provides additional
controls in its upper part:
• Pattern: Selects the early reflection pattern. This can affect the placement of your source
material.
• Pass Early: Allows the early reflections to pass when Freeze is engaged in the Main controls.
• Density: Controls the density of the selected pattern.
• Distribution: Controls where the early reflections go based on the input channel.
• 3D Dist (3D Distribution): Allows the distribution of the early reflections to move into the height
channels.

Thanks a lot for the information! ChatGPT says that I should stick to RC48, as it's the best from mentioned reverbs for easy getting great musical sound and less chance to ruin the mix by doing something wrong as a noob. So what's the deal with the Demo of RC48? It allowed me to bounce my track. And it sounds grate. Does it mean that I can use it without buying as long as my usege of it as simple as just to apply Piano Hall preset, and it takes less than 30 mnts? And later, when I'm not noob and want to do more complex things with it, I will have to buy it? Sounds unrealistically good, as I might never to get to that level, and that would mean that I can use the reverb that cost $100 for free? My brain can't believe in that and is saying "you understand something wrong, that can't be true". )))

Sorry , I do not have anymore info on the demo limitations than I already gave. You would have to ask Jeremy_NI or NI Support for further confirmations or further info. If there is any further limitations then they ought to show and no matter what then even if there is other limitations then you can still use the plugins between now and then.

As for buying the RC plugins then please notice that the Reverb Classics are also included with Komplete 15 Ultimate so if you would possibly want to get a bundle later then you ought to remember that.

Here is a good review also covering early reflections on the RC48, and talking about the general character of both units. You can also use two reverb units one for the early reflections (melda mconvolution for example) and one for the tail, or just a delay for er and the reverb for the tail but that's a next level technique and the RC.48 has all in it. Normally the demo stops working at some point or interrupts audio for a short time I also can't remember how exactly demos from native work but you can't use them forever and have to buy them at one point.
