trying to open Kontakt 6 with an nkm crashes?

hey guys, I'd appreciate your thoughts here?

I'm on an older system - MacOS 10.13.6, Kontakt (full) 6.2.1 (K6). and it usually all works just fine.

But….if I; open K6 first, then try and load an .nkm created in K6, it loads just fine.

But, OTOH, if K6 is not open and I try to open it by clicking on that same .nkm, K6 crashes before it opens. Everytime…

That sounds like a classic "order of operations" headache, especially on a legacy setup like yours. Since the file itself isn't corrupt (it loads fine once the engine is up), the issue is almost certainly a file association or initialization conflict during the "cold boot" of the application.

Possible solutions:

1- Rebuild the Kontakt Database

Sometimes the database that handles file paths and metadata gets "tangled." When Kontakt tries to load a multi (.nkm) and initialize the engine simultaneously, it trips over its own records.

• Open Kontakt (stand-alone). Go to Options > Database.
• Click Update or, for a fresh start, Reset and Scan.
• Let it finish completely before closing the app and trying the "click-to-open" method again.

2- Fix MacOS File Permissions

MacOS 10.13 is notorious for "permission drift." If the OS is trying to launch Kontakt via a file trigger, it might be hitting a wall when trying to write temporary "Undo" or "Cache" files to the System Library.

• Use Disk Utility to "Repair Disk Permissions" (though in 10.13, this is largely automated, you can still run First Aid on the system drive).
• Manual Fix: Ensure you have "Read & Write" privileges for the folder:~/Library/Application Support/Native Instruments/Kontakt 6

3- Clear the "NKX" and Plist Cache

The "plist" file tells MacOS how an app should behave when it opens. If this file is slightly corrupted, the instruction to "Open Kontakt AND load this specific file" might be sending a malformed command.

• To Fix: Navigate to ~/Library/Preferences/.

• Find com.native-instruments.Kontakt 6.plist and move it to the Trash.

• Note: This will reset Kontakt's internal settings (like audio interface selection), but it often clears "crash-on-launch" loops.

4- Check the Default "Multi"

If Kontakt is set to load a "Default Multi" on startup and you also double-clicking an .nkm, the software might be trying to load two different sets of heavy samples into RAM at the exact same millisecond.

To Fix: Open Kontakt, go to Options > Loading. Ensure "Load default instrument/multi" is unchecked.

Hopefully one of the above should fix your issue, however, be advised that, while it’s less "elegant," the most stable workflow for older systems is always App First, File Second. It gives the audio engine time to "handshake" with the hardware before the RAM is flooded with sample data.
