Auditioning Presets In Massive X

Is it possible to audition presets in Massive X? This is straightforward using Massive X in Komplete Kontrol, but I can't figure out how to listen to a preset in the browser when using Massive X as a plugin in my DAW (Ableton). It's also a bit annoying that the preset automatically loads when selecting with a single click.

Previews are only available in Komplete Kontrol at the moment, but the fact that Absynth 6 has previews built in suggests it should be possible for NI to do this for Massive X too

A heck of a lot of people, including myself, asked for single click preset loading - it was originally double-click but most people felt that was a pain, and made it impossible for those of us who like to use the keyboard arrows to scroll through presets. Can't please everybody I suppose

I have other synths that don't have previews, Pigments for example, or Alchemy, so I need to have the keyboard on and just keep tapping a note as I keep moving through the presets.

The advantage is that previews are quite limiting and tend not to give you a full idea of a sound, so because you can hit any note low or high, long or short, moves controller you have more flexibility over how you hear the sound. Plus its a consistent process with the other instruments.

That said, the downside is, it can get tedious and it doesnt work terribly well on deep sampled libraries as the load time of each preset can be a bit painful.

The other approach I'd have is I'd use something like Kontrol, use its preview capability to find a short list of sounds I wish to work with, sketch out an idea, then slowly replace each instance with an instance of the actual instrument with the same patch selected.

At least you can get the best of both worlds this way. A consolidated place to find an auditions sounds across a whole range of instruments, and the option to swap to the actual instrument with less processor overhead, is less cumbersome and is more immediate. It makes it a little easier to tweak sounds and save them as native patches if needed.

The easiest way to do this is to set up a MIDI loop (1-4 bars) and just cycle it in your DAW while browsing the Massive X presets.

There is that, if you work with midi loops. I play almost everything in manually, so any midi loop I'm using is my own. Which can be a little difficult if you've yet to record it. 🙃
