Hey all,
I purchased a new (well, refurbished) laptop, a Dell Precision as my new music computer. Uses an i9-11900H processor, with 64 gb ram. A wonderful upgrade from my previous, well worn 2016 laptop.
I use Cakewalk Sonar, and with Kontakt loaded, it was crashing consistently, often within seconds of playing the first note of an instrument. The crashing occurred no matter what version of Kontakt I used. I redownloaded almost all of my Kontakt instruments, and reinstalled Kontakt numerous times. After many hours and days of troubleshooting with chatgpt, and working with NI help, I had no success, and was feeling stuck and so frustrated. I then tried Gemini AI, and bingo, found the solution, which I want to share in case someone else is struggling.
I don't know exactly which solution was the final winner, but here are the three things I did, based on Gemini's recommendations, given the determination that this was not a software issue but more a hardware conflict.
- In windows, I unchecked the box allowing window's ability to turn off USB ports it thinks aren't needed. (Windows defaults to energy conserving).
- Updated the firmware of my external SSD, a samsung T5.
- I had both my MOTU M4 interface and my SSD plugged into the right side of the laptop. I moved the SSD to the left side.
So far, I haven't had a crash in about 6 hours of use. At most cakewalk would last 20 minutes before crashing; so I'm fairly confident I've fixed the issue.
Here is the Gemini summary of what the issue was, and the solutions:
Troubleshooting Kontakt 8 & Sonar: Fixing "In-Page Error" Crashes (C0000006)
If your Cakewalk Sonar crash dumps point to Kontakt 8 with Exception Code C0000006, you are dealing with a hardware-to-software communication failure. This is an In-Page Error, meaning the system tried to read data from your SSD, but the drive "vanished" or timed out mid-read.
The "Smoking Gun" Red Flags in the DMP File
- Exception Code C0000006: A physical communication error. The OS lost contact with the SSD.
- Stack Trace (
m7_ippsLn): Kontakt was performing high-speed Intel math calculations. When the SSD dropped out, the data stream broke, causing the math functions to "trip" and crash the plugin. - Low Buffer Latency (
Buffer Size 5): A very tight buffer leaves zero margin for error; any USB "jitter" becomes a fatal crash rather than a simple audio pop. - Engine Conflict (
MultiProc 1): Cakewalk was managing multiple CPU threads. When the SSD and Audio Interface share a USB bus, it creates "interrupt latency" that destabilizes these threads.
The Solution: A 3-Tiered Fix
Step 1: Physical USB Isolation (The "Left/Right" Rule)
Laptops often share one internal controller for all ports on one side.
- The Problem: The MOTU M4 and Samsung T5 SSD were on the same side, fighting for bandwidth.
- The Fix: Move the SSD to a port on the opposite side of the laptop. This gives the drive and the interface their own dedicated "lanes" (controllers) to the CPU.
Step 2: Update SSD Firmware
- The Problem: Older Samsung T5 firmware has known issues with "sleep" states that are too aggressive for real-time audio.
- The Fix: Use Samsung Magician software to update the drive to the latest firmware.
Step 3: Stop Windows 11 from Powering Down USB Ports
Windows 11 is aggressive with power saving. You must disable this in two different places:
A. Disable USB Selective Suspend:
- Press the Windows Key, type "Edit Power Plan," and hit Enter.
- Click Change advanced power settings.
- Expand USB settings > USB selective suspend setting.
- Change both "On battery" and "Plugged in" to Disabled.
- Click Apply.
B. Disable Device Management Power Saving:
- Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click USB Root Hub (USB 3.0) (do this for all "Root Hub" entries) and select Properties.
- Go to the Power Management tab.
- Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
- Note: If you don't see this tab, Windows is likely managing it via the Power Plan in Step A, but check all Hub entries to be sure.
Summary of System Specs
- Host: Cakewalk Sonar (version 2025.12)
- Plugin: Kontakt 8.8.0 VST3
- Interface: MOTU M4
- Storage: Samsung T5 External SSD
I hope someone finds this helpful.
Thanks,
