Migration nightmare : please help

My previous DJ macbook recently died, luckily I had a backup on an external drive and a new macbook ready to go! The previous traktor collection was managed via Itunes, the old school way. So the Itunes library folders + native intruments root folder are backed up okay.

My new macbook has much less storage space and can not come close to storing all my music on the internal HD.

How exactly can I get this backup drive collection functioning on my current laptop while keeping all of it on the external?

UPDATE :

I fixed it - it had to do with the way the Itunes library was linking to the mp3s

I was able to get this to work by renaming the external hard drive to what my internal drive used to be named and making sure the folder structure was exactly how it would have been if it was still on my local hard drive (mac : users/name/documents/native instruments/ etc)

After this it all worked.

I did check that page but unless I am missing something, this doesn't address my situation. Those articles show you how to migrate your collection + music onto a new computer but that's not what I need to do here.

I just want to keep everything on the external hard drive. And to make matters more complicated, that collection was previously managed by Itunes but won't necessarily be managed by Itunes on the new macbook. The migration articles don't seem to address this.

FYI :

I attached the external drive to my new laptop

I pointed the ROOT DIR to the root on the external

I pointed the 'music folder' to the location of the previous itunes library

The collection shows up in Traktor but still can't load any of the tracks

I assume this has something to do with the itunes library

What happens when you run a consistency check and press relocate on the missing tracks?

The issue is almost certainly nothing to do with iTunes. Your music location (folder) has now changed and your Traktor Collection is looking where it used to be, not where it is now. As @lord-carlos has suggested, run a Consistency Check on the whole collection and then relocate missing tracks. The document recommended by @Jeremy_NI does address your issue. See the section marked "Relocating your Tracks".
