Just a quick hello and couple of questions 😊

Hi all….

I am completely new to not only digital FX, but playing the electric guitar is pretty new to me as well. I have Googled these questions, and tried what was suggested but I am not getting much luck, so I was wondering if one of you good people could help?

So first, how come I am seeing videos of people getting GR7 for free, when I have just paid about £90 for mine! Did they have a giveaway that I missed?

So my two questions are: how do I get the Sidebar to show? I have tried deleting the Database folder, which is the only answer Google gave me, but that didn't work.

Second: I have just discovered the 882 presets! - you have to click the little head icon. But with some of them, the background noise when I don't play anything, is really loud. Although obviously when I play it drowns it out. Is this just normal for some kinds of presets?

Many thanks in advance…..apart from the above teething issues (hopefully), and the fact I paid £90 for it, it is an awesome piece of software. For someone like myself, I can't tell the difference between digital vs. analogue. I don't think the average listener can either?

Sorry to be a pain. Now I have discovered the presets, I have found another problem! With some of the presets, with so much going on it's unplayable, really choppy/laggy/crappy. The only thing I know about changing is the ASIO Config, the Buffer Size. Is a big number better or worse? A should I play with the Sample Rate?

For buffer sizes, lower is better for anything live. There's a balance between low buffer size and audio quality - the lower the buffer size the more work the CPU has to do so the chance of dropouts and glitches is higher. For sample rates, higher is better quality, but there's a pretty good chance you won't be able to tell the difference if you're running guitar effects so I'd say stick with 44.1/48. Again, high sample rates = higher cpu load.

And as for digital vs analog effects, yes you can tell the difference depending what you're doing, but digital is cheaper, easier to use and in my opinion as good in most circumstances.

I personally never even heard of any general giveaway of a full version of Guitar Rig 7 Pro. Mind you then anyone can get Guitar Rig 7 Player for free… It's possible that N.I. has given away a Guitar Rig 7 Pro to some Youtube streamers , but both then such a thing is common place in the industry and we are not informed every time that someone gets something for promotional purpose…

how do I get the Sidebar to show

Make sure that you are in GR 7 , the sidebar is not part of e.g. GR 6.

Are you using GR 7 Pro standalone ? If not then try that first.

Also , could we get a screenshot of the GR7 Pro standalone interface with the sidebar missing ?

To get the left sidebar showing presets click the little bookcase icon. If you mean the right sidebar that shows signal flows click the white circle with the i in it.

You'll get noise with a lot of the high gain presets. You can use the input gate to get rid of it while there's no input signal present. Make sure the gate is enabled at the top of the GR window and adjust the threshold value so you don't get noise but as soon as you play the signal is enabled.

Hi all…

Firstly, a massive thanks to all the helpful replies that you guys posted yesterday/today.

OK, the sidebar problem. I tried to run it as a plug-in through my DAW (Reason+) and there it was, the sidebar in all its glory. The only problem is, the glitchy/laggy bullshit was way, way worse, totally unusable. But @mykejb came to my rescue - just click the white button with an 'i' in it and voila, there was my sidebar.

So, now to the poor performance - glitchy/laggy, all that great stuff we love. My laptop is actually belongs to a mate of mine, and he was under the impression it was a gaming laptop. The only thing I knew for sure was it has 16mb of memory, which is great an' all but unfortunately, the rest of of it is utter shite!

I Googled to ask if the processor and graphics card were any good. It literally answered with a fat, resounding NO……LOL! Especially the graphics card, it really is the bare minimum specs - just to make the screen work I think….

And the processor is only good for basic office work, like, I don't know, typing a letter?! 😊

For now, it's just about ok for what I need. I have a really nice basic sound that will run with my lessons, so I can carry on with my new course I have started. For anyone interested, the sound is a Jazz Amp with a touch of chorus, and Vintage Verb, Studio setting, Mix 21.4%. It really does sound creamy….

So until I get a new laptop in the next couple of weeks, I just have to accept my laptop is very limited, although it does still run Civilization V (it's a game)!

Again, thanks for all the help - I'll keep an eye on the board and if I can help and give a little back to this lovely community, I will certainly try.
