Machine Plus Standelone and Traktor S4 mk3 - not sync

I have the following setup:

Machine + Standelone (connected to Mac Pro via Usb)
Traktor S4 MK3 with Traktor 4 Pro 

Now I want to synchronize all devices with each other. It works wonderfully with Ableton Link.
But I want to sync via Midi due to live situations.
When I call up Maschine 3 software or run the Maschine as a controller, the sync works.

I have created a generic midi in Traktor, with Traktor as output.
Unfortunately, I cannot select Traktor as input on the Machine + Traktor. Only Focus is available.
How can I get Traktor to synchronize with the Machine + Standelone?

Don't own a Maschine+ (just a Mk3). But I expect that in standalone mode MIDI signals aren't transmitted via USB. Ableton Link works as your Maschine+ is most likely on your WiFi network. Unless I am wrong you will need an USB MIDI interface. Or have to use your Maschine+ in controller mode to sync with Traktor.

Would it make sense to connect an external audio interface with a midi interface to the Mac and then connect the machine to it?

As long it is recognized as MIDI interface by your Mac it should work. You don't even need to use the audio ports of it.
