Studio One and KK MK3 MIDI Mode Integration

Hi folks, I'm trying to setup MIDI templates from my Komplete Kontrol S61 MK3 keyboard to control instruments in Studio One. 'Kind of' successful, but it feels pretty quirky. As it stands, it doesn't appear that MIDI CC events from the knobs and buttons are sent to Studio One. Instead, you have to use Studio One's Control Link to map the knob (which is detected in Studio One) to the control (see screenshot). For example, I have a knob 1 controlling MIDI CC14 on Channel 1, and an instrument that responds to that CC/Channel - but nothing happens.

The strange thing is that if I change the KK setup for that knob to transmit on MIDI channel 2, then the instrument DOES respond - even though it's set to only detect CC14 on channel 1!

My theory is that KK reserves channel 1 for sending specific knob/button info as control surface info (e.g. for communicating with Kontakt instruments) - although the mod wheel and touch strip really do just send MIDI CC's 1 and 11 that can be detected - maybe they are, along with the keyboard, working in 'keyboard' mode (if you've setup KK in S1, you'll know it has two configurations for keyboard and controller).

Of course, sometimes this behaviour is preferably - if I want one of the buttons to be sent as 'controller' data to map to an S1 command.

Any enlightenment on this area would be must useful, thanks!

Screenshot 1: Knob1 transmitting MIDI CC14 channel 1 received as control 'Knob 1'.
Screenshot 2: Knob2 transmitting MIDI CC15 channel 2 received as MIDI CC 15 (the [1] might be the channel received, and indeed that is detected).

    Hello,

have you tried to open komplete kontrol and then open pigments or whatever you like within kk. That´s the way it´s supposed to work and it works normally very well. You then map everything within kk if there is no mapping available and save this.

and no ch 1 is not reserved, you can send the keys and cc´s over channel 1 without any issues. Daw control goes through a totally different midi port, and controls to kk work totally behind the scenes also through different ways than using this midi port.

If you want to use the keyboard without kk for those plugins maybe this helps:

Thanks for your reply. I don't use Komplete Kontrol software, as it's been quite problematic. Myself and several others have reported what appears to be memory leaks / continual increase of memory usage (observed in Windows Task Manager). After performing some experiments, I found that it was with Kontakt instruments, so yes, I could use KK for non-Kontakt. I pivoted to Kontakt 8 to get away from KK - there have been other issues raised (and some solved), and in general, integration with Studio One and my keyboard was not going well. However, I've been ok with Kontakt 8, hence not bothering to find out whether KK behaves itself now - I might give that a go.

Incidentally, although the integration is quirky (regarding my observation with MIDI channel 1 and having to use Studio One control link rather than standard MIDI mappings), it seems to work quite well, i.e. I can load multiple instances of the instrument (Harmony Bloom in my case) and Studio One instantly recognizes this (as long as I set the correct non-global focus) and maps the parameters. So maybe it's a happy accident ;-)
