Midi CC in Kontakt Player 8

Hi, Some instruments in KP8 will accept a right-click Learn Midi CC just fine, like Ethereal Earth; another, like Hypha will bring up a quick-load dialogue box below. How can I input Midi CC into Hypha please?

Ok, so you when in the Komplete Kontrol application or plug-in, when you have a Komplete Kontrol keyboard, integration happens, you can browse, load, play and control presets. Everything is already assigned to the 8 knobs.

So, on a Komplete Kontrol track it would not make sense to turn the keyboard to MIDI mode (where every knob and button can send MIDI CCs).

Here's a workaround from the Kontakt team:

    • open classic view
    • go to Midi Automation tab
    • hit the Learn Button there
    • turn the control on your midi device, you want to assign
    • left click on the control in the Instrument UI, you want to assign to that CC
    • you can save the NKI via "Menu/File/Save as" in order to keep the assignments

There should be improvements to the MIDI assignments in the future for these new libraries but we don't have an ETA at the moment.

Kontakt 8 midi editor is a disaster for new instruments. Hopefully we see improvements quick.

If you cannot do it with right click, then you have to use the Learn button in classic mode in the tab for automation for newer NI instrument. Sometime certain controls cannot assign MIDI CC.

The drag and drop MIDI assign do not work either on newer instruments - hope to see NI fix this too.

@Judson Collins @MLARS Do you have other examples of products where this occurs? I can definitely reproduce the issue with Hypha on Kontakt 8 and on Kontakt 7, it doesn't seem to be something within the Kontakt application but more on the library's side. It would be helpful to have a few more instruments where you notice that.

With Claire you cannot drag and drop (pick MIDI CC number from the CC list and drag it to the Kontakt instrument control) Midi CC assign from Classic view, you are forced to use the Learn button at the bottom of the same page, and have MIDI hardware connected to assign MIDI CC. This works fine on older instruments like Symphony series and Noire. I should be able to quickly assign MIDI CC without hardware. Important when you set up a large template.

Specifically recalling MIDI CC settings would be nice too when you work on hundreds of similar Kontakt instances (one for each track) - snapshots is not feasable here. MIDI CC Kontakt editor for assigning MIDI CC needs a lot of improvements.

Again the Kontakt 8 is currently a half baked between generations sample player that needs ALOT of improvements!

I tested all my products in Kontakt 7, and the following had issue (i.e would not open a CC dialogue, instead opening the 'Quick -Load box): Hypha, Kontakt Factory Library, and Factory Selection 2.

In Kontakt Player 8: Hypha, K Factory Library, Factory Selection 2 (I tested Colour-Lethal, and when the mouse was placed over the cassette tape image above the dials, the CC dialogue did come up, although it would not activate any dials. This happened a few times then, could not be reproduced).

In Factory Selection, quite by accident (through random sample testing), when trying the World/Oud, I selected the Articulation/Note, and it automatically linked the Type dial to its right. Further testing found that even selecting different dials, and clearing CC data still resulted in linking the Note/Type/Speed dials. I assume they are not to run concurrently. Indeed the Speed dial moved erratically in relation to the Note and Type which had auto linked.

I tested the Shakuhachi and found erratic linking of the Note/Type/ Speed group also.

I didn't run through everything in all Libraries, but checked to see if they had CC dials on some instruments available, and that they would perform. I assumed the other samples under the working libraries would be in good order.

In Komplete Kontrol (which I find to be so unintuitive compared to the other two players - and it would be nice to have a keyboard display function available), I opened Analog Dreams. I had entered CC data whilst it was open in another player days earlier; I did not open any saved version of Analog Dreams; the CC data was present, however it could not be cleared. Only a few instances of Cancel Midi CC came up, and then they did not clear anyway. No matter what I tried, I could not Learn/Cancel any of the 8 dials.

Hypha did not offer any CC menu at all. Only mouse control.

I opened the Irish Harp, the CC menu came up, nothing happened, and KK crashed. I tried again and it crashed again. I then opened Hybrid Keys which had worked well earlier; now it only offered Learn CC but not Erase. I had entered data when I opened it earlier; it was still present but could not be removed.

I closed and restarted KK, and opened Irish Harp but it was frozen; Kinetic Treats opened, but provided no menus at all, some system instability.

I opened Kontakt 7 to try and clear the system; had to reconnect the Komplete A49; no sound would come; checked Asio, configured, still no sound.

Opened Ethereal Earth in KK after rebooting Midi keyboard in Test My Midi; opened Ethereal, no sound; system sound had crashed somewhat when opening You Tube. System has always been fine and able to have a Daw, MPC and you tube running simultaneously. I run an SSL Driver on Windows 11 and has been excellent to date.

I have not had any of the players crash until today; Irish Harp (which was stable in the first two players was now unstable in KK (which has not crashed to date, nor Kontakt 7 or Player 8).

I shall post this and reboot system (for the 123,456,789 time in the last 25 years). But its getting better, largely.

Hope this helps. Too much faulty CC has throttled the system it seems.

    Kind Regards

Rebooted computer, opened Kontakt 7 and Player 8. Bother worked. Opened KK and it crashed. Opened K 7 and P8, no sound out of either, although all settings in order. All the lights go out on the Komplete Keyboard when I open Komplete Kontrol. Another day.

I don't know. Not sure I care anymore. iLok tells me there's an issue, KK crashes again, and lights out on Kontrol. Cant even see the SSL audio interface. No idea how many years I have wasted on this stupid machine. Not touching Komplete Kontrol until there's an update. Kontakt and Player seem ok.

    Kind Regards

@Judson Collins It seems you have a lot of issues with your Kontakt libraries and Komplete Kontrol, maybe you should get in touch with our support.

For Kontakt, it's here: https://bit.ly/NI_support_kontakt and Komplete Kontrol is here: https://bit.ly/NI_support_Kontrol

If you are loading these libraries in Komplete Kontrol, the controls of the keyboard are directly assigned to parameters in the library. You can add controls inside the Komplete Kontrol application/plug-in, then save the preset as a user preset. You shouldn't have to use MIDI assignments, as they could create conflicts with the NKS assignments (which id more than MIDI).

@MLARS @Judson Collins Regarding the libraries with no possibility to assign MIDI parameters I've reached out to the Kontakt team and will update this thread.

Thanks. The libraries in Komplete Kontrol already have CC MIDI assignments in place? That would explain some things. I have saved in Kontact and Player and had CC assignments resumed.

Are you saying whereby creating my own MIDI assignments, its causing the conflicts I experienced?

Sorry I don't understand the following:  (which id more than MIDI).
