Hello everyone !

I use Windows 10 Family - version 22H2 - 64 bits

I use the keyboard-controller "Komplete Kontrol A25" (Hardware). According to the application "Native Access" the firmware is the most recent version.

In Windows Device Manager it says that :

Driver of Komplete Kontrol A25 Midi is : Microsoft version 10.0.19041.5369

Driver of Komplete Kontrol A Daw is : Bome Software version 2.1.0.44

I use the container "Komplete Kontrol" (software) version 3.3.4

I use the sequencer "Studio One 5" version 5.5.2

All virtual instruments are "VST3" standard

I have this message when starting "Studio One" : "Failed to open Komplete Kontrol A25 Midi".

The problem that (I think) results from this is the following : when I use "Studio One" I have to open the container (software) "Komplete Kontrol" in order to be able to control the virtual instruments with the different buttons of the keyboard-controller (hardware). And so, if I don't open the container (software) it is not possible to control the virtual instruments with the keyboard-controller (hardware).

Can you help me ?

What do you see when opening “External devices” and selecting the A25? Can you change the Receive from and Send to parameters?

In any case, Komplete Kontrol software must be used to integrate the NKS functionalities with the keyboards buttons.

What do you mean with “it is not possible to control the virtual instruments with the keyboard-controller”?

The keybed is not playing other VI not working inside of KK? (i.e. Presonus instruments)

You can’t use midi mapping to assign parameters to buttons, knobs,…? Which, between, requires to switch A25 in midi mode (SHIFT + MIDI / PLUG-IN)

In "Studio One", there are 2 ways to load a virtual instrument, either directly or through the "Komplete Kontrol" container. What I mean is that the buttons (browser, midi plug-in, preset, etc.) do not activate the virtual instruments normally (or activate badly, or not at all, whether they are "presonus" or "native instruments", or others) when I load them without going through the "Komplete Kontrol" container…

That’s NKS, a NI “format” (that can be adopted also by third parties) that practically has parameters pre mapped to NI keyboards (and now also some third parties).

If you load an instrument that is not NKS, nothing will be pre mapped. That’s normal.

All NI libraries are NKS and can be loaded only through Kontakt (and KK, which is loading Kontakt inside itself). No “normally” for them. I suppose the NI VI you are referring to when talking about loading them “normally” are the few synths/programs that can be used directly as plugins (Battery, FM 8, Maschine, Massive, Massive X, Reaktor . And Super 8, if you have the abandoned plugin version). That’s also why for all the other libraries you won’t have an icon (a .exe file) to launch them Standalone (except Massive X, which is only plugin).

The other NI products that are plugins are FXs

See it like this: they are not plugins. The plugins are Kontakt and KK. The other are libraries working (and built) inside of them.

From the Studio One 4.5.3 version (My version is "5") Presonus introduced integration with Native Instruments’ Komplete series of keyboards, which is a big deal. Although these keyboards are theoretically dedicated to NKS-compatible plug-ins and mixer/transport hands-on control, with Windows systems (Mac fans, there’s more on this later) you can use the keyboard as a general-purpose, hands-on MIDI controller for non-NKS plug-ins, including all bundled PreSonus effects and instruments (as well as plug-ins from other manufacturers). Also, unlike standard NKS, you’ll be able to control effects, regardless of whether or not they’re inserted in an instrument track.

That message is indeed strange, since then the keyboard gets recognized.

It could have something to do with Komplete Keyboards having multiple midi ports (Midi, DAW, Ext). But I don’t know about A series

That’s not correct. Studio One never had “direct” access to NKS. Only through KK.

Studio One doesn’t “read” NKS type files. It “reads” the wrapper (KK) which then uses NKS functionalities. Even because NKS instruments aren’t even available to load them “directly” in a track.

What Presonus is telling in that message is exactly what is happening:

Integration with NI keyboards means they can be used (also) to control Studio One (transport, mixer,…).

When they say “you can use the keyboard as a general-purpose, hands-on MIDI controller for non-NKS plug-ins, including all bundled PreSonus effects and instruments (as well as plug-ins from other manufacturers)” the meaning is exactly that: general-purpose (like every other midi keyboard), meaning without the NKS advantages (the premapping).

Meaning that when you load a non NKS instrument (or effect) in another track, the NKS advantages won’t be there. Just “normal” midi, which must be learned.

And when they say “you’ll be able to control effects”, that is true. But not being pre mapped, you have to midi learn. AKA saying to the software “I want that parameter to be controlled by that knob”.

The main point: “Although these keyboards are theoretically dedicated to NKS-compatible plug-ins and mixer/transport hands-on control”.

This is what makes Komplete keyboards are special: they use NKS and they have other pre mappings for various DAWs integration.

What they are telling after is “but they can be used also as general-purpose midi controllers”. Which has no pre mappings
