Auto Sampler: MIDI to is set to None

hellow!

learning auto sampler and I'm stuck at this step: MIDI to has no option hence Start recording is greyed out.

Not sure why I have to set a MIDI to since I'm sampling my Hydrasynth and it's coming via the RME Babyface Pro (3-4 via jack cable as regular audio - no MIDI) and set to Ext to In2 L+R in Machine, which works perfectly when using the sampler

100% sure I have to enable something in the prefs but since I don't understand what differs from Sampler (which works) to Auto Sampler (which doesn't work) I'm stuck XD

    You have to send MIDI to the synth that you're autosampling, because Maschine has to trigger each note of the synth, make a recording, then trigger the next note.

    so you confirm that

    Sampler is audio based

    Auto Sampler is MIDI based?

    I also assume I need a MIDI cable from the Hydra to Maschine?

    and also I need to activate the Hydra on the MIDI Output in the prefs?

    But I've got another question:

    I also want to Auto Sample say a pencil with multiple velocites, and this can only come from audio. Is that even possible?

    seems that auto sample doesn't work with Audio but only MIDI
