.wav to .mp3 conversion, file persists in the library!? possible?

i would like to know if there is an capability of keeping the file in the library assuming that the file format has changed, BUT location and all that stays the same…

*Reason of asking is, the library grows and to keep the data mass small i would consider to choose to convert some of the .wav files…

You could search and replace the file names in the collection.nml

But I never tried it myself.
