Kontakt Player and NKI files

After every project I back up my NKI files on my Session String Pro 2 and Session Horns Pro instruments just in case I ever want to re work them in the future. I recently switched from Cakewalk to Studio One. I went into my Cakewalk projects to back up the MIDI files. Just to try opening a Cakewalk project I did a year ago in Studio One I loaded the MIDI then I opened Kontakt 6 and loaded the NKI file for the Session Strings Pro 2 instrument I used and got an error that said something like "Cannot open because you're using an old version. Update to the new version". I updated to the newest version of 6 but got the same error. So I downloaded and installed version 8 but in this one I could not locate the NKI files. It was not an option. Could somebody please tell me how to correct this or may I as well not back up NKI instrument files anymore. I hate it when they change things like this!

    All Kontakt libraries were updated to require Kontakt 7.6.1+ in Sept 2023. This was big news. If you are intent on staying with Kontakt 6 - you can get all your "old" v6 files here:

    But if you have already moved to Kontakt 8 and are settling into it - then maybe you do not need the K6 libraries.

    Also - no point in backing up any .nki file. Those are never going to change for any instrument over it's lifetime and as you can see - you can't ven load them as time goes by.

    You're very wise to back up your nki files. I would recommend also routinely backing up nkm files (Patch Only). This will help with many of the problems associated with upgrading to a later version of Kontakt.

    Unless there have been earth-shaking changes in Kontakt, nki (and nkm) files will always load into Kontakt provided they were not saved in a later version of Kontakt than the one you're using. If you can't find these files displayed within a new unfamiliar version of Kontakt, you should always be able to find them with Windows Explorer and drag and drop them into the Kontakt area.

    Sure I need to back them up. I use the Animator quite a bit in SS Pro 2. If I'm going to recreate those animations they need to be backed up.

    I tried dragging the files from the explorer and a box comes up saying there are like 23000 files that can't be located. OK, so they changed something that makes what was once possible impossible. Happens all the time. Stupid of me to try it. I got all of the past projects saved in WAV files anyway so who needs the MIDIs?

    That's normal. You have to tell Kontakt where the samples for the nki are located - "Browse for Folder." (If you don't know, you're stuffed). If you saved the nki "with samples" they should be in the same folder as the nki. Otherwise, on some drive or other? "Assumed at…" can often be where the files actually are.
