Feature Request: MK3 Keyboard

Please provide automatic sensing of aftertouch capabilities of instruments and automatic "downgrading" to monophonic aftertouch while in polyphonic AT mode. Currently, if you default to polyphonic AT on the MK3 keyboard, you will get no aftertouch at all if you are playing an instrument with only monophonic AT capability. You then have to manually go in and switch on the keyboard, and then back again to polyphonic AT as you change instruments. It's a real workflow killer.

I think this is something that MIDI 2.0 could bring with it's property exchange options. But it feels as though we're quite a long way off that right now. Effectively plugins will be able to broadcast all kinds of information to hardware via that method, and the hardware responds by setting itself up appropriately.

The Mk3 is supposedly going to embrace MIDI 2.0 features in the future, so hopefully we'll see something like this.

But I presume you're talking something more basic in the interim where Komplete Kontrol is able to change the aftertouch mode based on if something like the CS-80 is loaded up?

What you're describing is currently not something a keyboard controller can do.

The software would itself need to inform the controller about whether it supports mono and/or poly AT, and then what state it's currently in.

As more software implements MIDI 2 support, it is theoretically possible that they implement MIDI Capability Inquiry, which would allow software and hardware to exchange this information.

But until that happens, there's nothing NI can do to implement your feature request.

It’s weird that polyphonic AT can’t be configured to work as “last AT trigger” on an instrument with monophonic AT. Its seems quite basic.

    That would be useful

It appears some plugins don't have a problem with both modes, for example Arturia plugins respond to aftertouch, it doesn't specify which kind, but you can hear that if you are in channel AT mode it is affecting all notes but in Poly mode just the one note being depressed, so somehow they have made it so their plugins 'merge' both kinds of AT signals - I wish more plugins did that.
