Problem with Kontrol s4 mk2 audio and monitor output

I'd be grateful for any ideas - am currently thinking my 2nd hand kontrol is knackered but I may be missing something obvious.

I'm running traktor pro 3 on a windows 10 laptop. I'm connected to active monitors by 1/4 jacks. I'm using the kontrol both as a mixer for two turntables, and to run traktor. the kontrol recognises the inputs - the software responds to it, and it's showing levels and loading tracks - but I cannot get sound out of the speakers or to the headphones for love nor money.

I've tested both speakers and headphones on other devices and they're fine. I've also tried running the output to an amplifier and speaker using the RCA outs, and still nothing. So I think the problem has to be with my preferences, and I have tried every combination I can conceive of. Images attached of currents options - there may be something glaringly obvious here to someone who knows. Any advice most gratefully received.

I fear that you are right, and the device may only work as controller. Have you tried to set is as windows audio device and tried to hear something from a browser or media player?
