Cubase 13 macos crashing/freezing with recent Kontrol S MK3 firmware 1.7.6 / driver
Hi,
I just tried my new Kontrol S61 MK3 with Cubase 13 on macos in our studio.
Cubase seems to be confused, if the device runs in midi 2.0 mode… I bet because Cubase seem not to be able to disable midi inputs at all, so it always will receive the exact double midi data, one time from the virtual midi 1 port, and one time from the midi 2.0 port. This is only a guess.
Symptoms are a hanging core midi process and a hanging daw, if you change a setting in the studio setup, like visibility of a kontrol midi port. As soon as you add more than one track, the midi input also is muted, due to the hanging core midi system process. If you disable midi 2.0 mode in the kontrol device (also removing the device in the midi setup of macos of course), the problem is gone.
So my question here is, does it require an update for Cubase or an update form NI to fix this issue?
Steps to reproduce:
1. Use a Kontrol MK3 device with firmware 1.76 and set to midi 2.0 mode
2. Create a new project in Cubase 13
3. Add a track using Kontrol VST, add some notes
4. Add a second track using Kontrol VST. Midi input should not work anymore now.
5. Watch macos activity monitor, sorted by cpu usage. Said core midi process should now use a ton of CPU.
6. Go to studio setup / midi ports and try to hide a port of the Kontrol device. Cubase should hang now.
Expected results:
- Uninterrupted midi input in Cubase 13, even with the midi 2.0 mode of the Kontrol MK3 device
- No hanging processes, no performance issues
Workaround:
- Disable midi 2.0 mode in the device, only for Cubase. Other daws work normally.
