Kontrol S49 MK3 via MioXL

Hello,

I recently got a MioXL to assist with midi routing my devices. I've been plugging in my S49 directly into the USB host ports of the MioXL and it's been great for sending midi to my hardware synths. What I didn't realize until now is that the standard connectivity between the keyboard and NI's software has been severed when routed through the Mio.

Is there a special port labelling that will allow NI software to "see" the S49 like normal so I can use it as if it's plugged straight into my mac? Or does it 100% require a direct connection to the computer in order to function?

I'm looking for a solution until the day exists in which midi functions over usb and DIN at the same time. Then I could just DIN to the mio and be good.

Kontrol is two things at once: a MIDI controller, and an integrated NKS controller. The former would work in your scenario, but it needs the USB connection to do all the proprietary communication necessary for the DAW Control and NKS auto-mapping.

Unfortunately, the "what does or doesn't work" with the iConnectivity mio-series Host devices is not documented very well, and related information that used to be available on their web site seem to have been removed/relocated. I'm attaching the document I saved as a PDF from their online Knowledge Base several years ago, and also posting a link to a YouTube discussion from "Scott's Synth Stuff" on integrating the mioXL in a studio with mixed keyboards. Hope these help!

Thanks for your response. I was hoping it would work since the keyboard is class compliant. My other class compliant keyboards seem to be able to talk to their companion apps or librarians. I'll have to keep poking around.

I was hoping if I copied the exact same port label name and applied it to the mio, the application would see the keyboard. No luck yet.

I've seen Scott's video but I'm going to give it another listen to see if I missed anything.

I have quite a few hardware synths as well as using NKS a lot so I wanted a way to use both without having to constantly unplug and plug back in the USB cable. Since I have an external audio/MIDI interface (RME Fireface) I created a patch in Plogue Bidule (which is a great Swiss Army knife for all sorts of audio/MIDI routing and composition) that routes the MIDI out from Komplete Kontrol into my Fireface MIDI in and then I route the hardware MIDI outs from the Fireface to my hardware synths. I think you can do this in the free version of Bidule, not certain it will work with the Mio as I don't have one to try it with but the principle could maybe be adapted - it's a very simple patch

I currently have a workaround using a software utility on my Mac to send the midi back to the keyboard and out it's din midi to the mio. And then the mio will handle the midi directly when my computer (laptop) isn't present. This is the best flexible option I've come up with for now. But I'll be looking forward to the day simultaneous USB and din midi functions!

The latest update to Kontrol S MK3 allows you to send MIDI out via USB and DIN (5 pin MIDI port) simultaneously
