Connecting a Synth into the Kontrol S8

I've tried plugging in my synth into one of my channels of my Kontrol S8 DJ controller. Unfortunately, the level are low. I want to record the synth live while I'm doing some live remixes. Do I need a pre-amp? What gear do you recommend I use to boost the signal?

In terms of audio engineering and audio hardware in general, I'm a total N00b.

    Have you tried messing with the Phono/Line Switch next to each channel input?
