Installation - changed "Application install location" to external disk
Hello,
I am new to NI. I changed the Application install location to my external SSD (permanently connected) on my Mac Mini M1 and installed the free Komplete, Kontakt Player and some instruments. Later I saw installation videos telling me NOT to change this location to external drive! Will I get in trouble ?
The next day I bought the full Komplete 14 Standard package, but I have not dared to install it yet! Should I and can I uninstall everything, before installing the full K14 ? And if yes, how do I do that?
I bought "Session Guitarist - Strummed Acoustic". Will I lose an activation if I uninstall or does it recognize my Mac if I reinstall ? What is the correct way to de-register if I buy a new Mac and would like to move everything to the new one ?
I hope you can help with this, as I am a total noob with NI.

So far so good! I have installed all the apps Battery 4, Kontakt 7, Guitar Rig 6 (why are they not putting GR7 in?!), Massive + X, Reaktor 6. No error messages. I have only tested Kontakt 7, with around 10 instruments, but this works fine !
I will update this later when I have tested more apps.

Normally you have the Applications folder set to the default and change only the Content and Download locations.
You don't "lose an activation" with NI software, at least I've never had any issues with the number of concurrent installations and I've been installing and reinstalling for years without uninstalling anything first. Any Plugin Alliance and iZotope stuff you get with K14 is licenced differently though and it's best to deactivate them if you're changing to a new PC. You still get a few licence counts though

Thank you Mike,
Should I change the Application location back to default on the MacHD and just install the Komplete 14 and hope for the best? In Native Access it has an Option for Kontakt 7 to "Update" - not install, so I fear it will go wrong. I would prefer to uninstall all the free sw, but I understand this is a bit tedious.

I'd change it back if you're going to install the full K14 package. I'm not sure how you'd uninstall the versions you've already installed, you probably need someone more mac-oriented to answer that - pretty sure @Kymeia uses a Mac so would probably be able to help if he sees this.

Tbh I’ve not heard of anyone installing applications to an external drive but I guess it should be ok to just run the uninstaller for whatever is already installed, then reset application location to the default and install everything. content and downloads can go on the external, apps and plugins should be on the system drive.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have decided to try to install Komplete 14 Standard with the Application location on the external SSD ! If it doesn't work I suppose I can try to uninstall everything and install to the local MacHD. I will install the Apps 1 at a time to see if I get error messages. Since I only have the small Mac Mini M1 with 8 GB memory and 256 GB SSD, I bought a 2 TB NVMe SSD which is permanently attached.
It is strange/wrong from NI to allow changing the App install location in the settings, if that breaks their SW?!

It's quite likely that it works - it's just not something I've ever done. Let us know how you get on :)
