Traktor Kontrol Z1 FX Mode

According to Z1 Manual, section 4.1.6 FX Mode

Press MODE + ON to switch to the corresponding FX mode.

⇨ You will notice the ON button's dim backlighting switches from blue to orange.

I can't seem to get this to work, when i press both the MODE+ON button the ON button does not change to Orange (FX Mode).

Is there some settings I need to check for this to work ?

Thank you

    Answer ✓

    4.1.6 FX Mode

The second function on the FILTER | FX knob controls the FX parameter of the Z1.

Note that this FX Mode only applies when using the Z1 with TRAKTOR DJ!

    ...

You are using Traktor Pro 3, right?

    hi there, thanks for reply.

Yes im using Traktor Pro 3, version 3.9.090.

Ok i just read it extra carefully and realized that "Traktor DJ" actually meant the software and not a generic term.

"Traktor Pro 3" is NOT the same as "Traktor DJ"

    Thanks for hint :)

Hi, I would like to have more explanations regarding the KONTROL Z1 controller. I use Traktor dj pro 3.5.3 and I've just bought it and everything works fine except that pressing MODE and ON at the same time to switch from Filter mode to FX mode the backlight of the ON button does not turn orange. Of course nothing happens and it does not go to the FX section but remains on "Filter on". I've just read here that this change mode does not work with Traktor Dj Pro versions but only with Traktor Dj without Pro. I would like confirmation of that. Anyway, can you work around the problem by changing the mapping? And in this case which entry to add in the "Assignment Table" window? I
Thanks in advance for your reply

Just for information, the two variants are called:

    • Traktor Pro (Version #)
    • Traktor DJ

Hi again…Anyway, It's a pity because I thought that buying a Native Controller everything would go smoothly and fast, you know, damn it's the same brand!! Before I bought the X1 I was using Reloop Mixtour and even if the Mixtour is not officially supported for Traktor they offer the mapping as an addon that is quite old but objectively it works quite well and to switch from Filter mode to FX mode is very easy and already mapped!! Also consider that the Reloop mapping for Traktor Dj Pro is old and works well ! I hope in a driver or mapping upgrade or at least a way to work around the problem by changing manually the mapping. Quite disappointed! Thanks

NI's Traktor Pro is awesome for it's versatility, but it's out-of-the-box capability sometimes hits a brickwall.

If you put in the work to find out how to achieve what you want instead of expecting awesomeness to just drop in your lap you will find that it's really worth the effort.

Patience and persistance is underrated imo.

P.S. The mapping capabilities of Traktor are awesome, but require some reading and a lot of testing. There are no comprehensive tutorials out there to describe it all, but a few good youtube vids should be out there.

I recommend going to DJTechTools for some insightful blogposts, a forum-archive with many dated but still useful threads and a comprehensive mapping library for lots of devices.

Hi there. " If you put in the work to find out how to achieve what you want instead of expecting awesomeness to just drop in your lap you will find that it's really worth the effort ", I completely agree with you but in this case I'm talking about a very banal but very useful operation while Mixing, I'm only talking the mode to switch from Filter mode to FX mode and which some other controllers from other brands do easily because is inside the mapping! Anyway, I really don't understand why Native Instruments still sells the Z1 on their site without making upgrade and saying, I think, that it is compatible even with Traktor Dj pro 4!!! Who knows, maybe with this version this trivial operation of switching from filter to fx works? At this point I have serious doubts.

    Thanks

I can think of several reasons why.

The only time serious re-engineering on any NI Traktor device was done, ever, was shortly after release to fix bugs.

The last time the F1 functions where updated was when they introduced stems way back. The F1 was top of the line at the time, just like the Z1.

When the MK3 line came out along with MixerFX (after the first survey i ever saw about how to have easy access to channel FX) not one of the MK2 devices ever got an update.

Only now that TP4 came out, the MK3 line got a tiny little upgrade to help differentiate loading tracks and stems. Even after years of proposals to changes to the code, even after years of users doing custom upgrades to get out everything possible. Zip.

You can pretty much forget that the Mk1 or Mk2 lines (including the old Z1) will ever get upgraded. Whining about it is just a waste of time. NI is a business, and after the giant layoff a couple of years back, when they closed their overseas presence and a new owner downsized the operation, what do you think will happen? Right.

I don't want to disappoint you or provide a slap in the face. I understand you. After years of proposing simple, easy to implement ideas with no results i have come to the conclusion, for my own peace of mind, to just do what i can myself and try to encourage others to do the same. Community projects can be a lot of fun and may even extend the life of the devices when NI can publicly observe they are still in use and they will make a lot hardcore fans very unhappy if they suddenly stop working.

This is all to encourage you to find a workaround.

So, i invite you to join the club! 🦋

Note: I wouldn't be surprised if the next Traktor device they put on the market will be variation of the Z1, slightly bigger with some extra controls for MixerFX. If that were true (i have no clue), they'd be stupid to put in any more effort into a device that would keep the sales of the new one lower than they could be.

Thank you very much for your clarifying words! Sadly I think I was foolishly hasty in trusting the brand, I was sure that Native was impeccable... I should have informed myself better also because these "little objects" cost too much especially because some of these are old and Native pretends that they are still working at 100% .... However, I am not an expert technician, I enjoy tinkering around, mine is a hobby that I have been cultivating since I was a DJ when I was very young in a private radio.....now I enjoy uploading mixtapes on https ://hearthis.at/henry-littleballs/ using Traktor with Reloop Mixtour which I will now alternate with the Kontrol Z1. However, Reloop has an email to write to and above all they respond! On the other hand, I have the impression that the Z1's sound card is slightly better. When I have time I'll try to tinker with the mapping. Thanks again and have a good night.

What would you expect the FX mode to do?

I have a z1 mapping that turns the filter into the mixer FX. You can find it somewhere here on the forum.

I only found this: https://maps.djtechtools.com/mappings/1789. The Tsi file is definitely old and after importing it into Traktor Dj Pro 3.5.3 it was a disaster. By pressing Mode together with the On button this changes color but in Traktor Dj Pro light up the third knob of the effects section instead of the FX On…as well as other anomalies.... Among other things I had to reinstall the controller driver to go back to the factory settings because the lights didn't go back to blue.

    Thanks anyway. Henry

This is the one I made to cycle through the Mixer FX on the z1

I'm not sure if that is what you want.

Hi, I just imported your file, you were very kind but unfortunately it didn't work... nothing happens when you click on shift on the pc keyboard + Cue left or righ on the Z1 controller. Enough I wasted too much time! Damn it means I will use the effects using the mouse or more simply I will go back to the Relloop Mixtour. I may be boring but it really pisses me off to think that a controller from a different brand works better from a mapping point of view than one from the same brand of software (Traktor Dj Pro 3.5.3)!!! Thanks anyway and see you next time. Henry

With shift I meant "mode" on the controller.
