Kontakt 7 Screen Flicker: July 2023 Edition

Hello,

Just curious as to how folks are managing the Screen Flicker issue w/ Kontakt at present date. The older fixes for the issue seemed to be to disable G-Sync on the display, which is less than optimal clearly, has anything come up/changed since then?

Odd anecdote, my dual displays both have G-Sync. My 1080p display @ 144hz at least does not appear to flicker. My 1440p display $ 165hz flickers like you wouldn't believe. I understand it's nitpicky, but can't get the sampler able to function properly with sort of modern display technology? Never seen another application behave this way. Thanks.

Just a guess, it seems that 144hz works, so is it possible to reduce your 1440p display from 165hz to 144hz? This setting is already too high and you might needed those rates for games of videos, but definitely not for audio.

Or, do some experimentation. Go to the Kontakt folder in your hard drive, find Kontakt.exe, right-click on it and selects Properties.

Then, go to the Compatibility tab and "play" with the options there (mostly with the high DPI settings), it might lead you to a solution.

Hi, Im getting 2 types of screen flickering in Kontakt7.

1/ Flickering only when moving the mouse -happens somewhat intermittently

2/ Flickering on its own.- Happens a lot.

It hasn't happened in standalone. So I tested in Logic in a completely clean project. I use 2 screens, Logic 10.7.9, Monterey (latest). Latest Kontakt. KK 2.7.2 (the most stable for me)

So far it hasn't happened directly on my iMac screen when I first load up an instance of K7. Its not until I move the Kontakt window over to my other monitor. Sometimes when I move it back to iMac screen it will stop flickering, and other times not. Its Hit and miss. It happens whether I load Kontakt directly into Logic or whether I load it into Logic through KK. Loaded into KK is a little less problematic.

I tested with randomly selected products, Sequi, Irish Harp, Kontakt Library2, and others. Doesn't seem to be specific to an instrument. I can always get the flickering to stop if I click on the diagonal resize marks at the bottom right and slightly resize. Thats not to say it wont start up again though. It does, so this is pretty annoying. Ive never had anything remotely like this before. Anyone know why this happening.

EDIT - I tried to load another .gif showing the flickering on its own but the animation didn't work. Perhaps file a little too big?

@Jojo123 Can you check what graphic card is on your computer?

@narot23 Unfortunately there is no other workaround to turn G Sync off at the moment.

Weird, because I have dual G-Sync displays. One, an older 1080p display, and another, a modern 1440p display. To my knowledge G-Sync is enabled on both, and on the 1080p display, Kontakt does not cause screen flicker. The only hard difference I'm aware of is that the 1080p display has the actual G-Sync chip, the new model follows the VESA standard which didn't exist at the time.

FWIW I elected to choose the best answer. There is no solution, at 144hz it does not work/display correctly. It could have something to do with multi-display configs, G-Sync implementation (non-hardware), scaling, you name it. With games I accept there's jank, I don't buy/play often and the cost of what I play is not very high.

When you've invested in something like Kontakt, one would presume these types of problems would get addressed with more urgency. Now, it's kinda hard to get a display that doesn't use Freesync/G-Sync because it's part of the VESA standard, it stinks of spaghetti code/legacy support complexities that aren't my problem. I paid a lot for Kontakt, hopefully NI figures it out sooner than later.

@narot23 I've forwarded your experience and comments to the devs and added to the existing bug report (KT-8124).
