Line in issues on Maschine+ (standalone)

Hello, I have a Maschine+ I wanted to try sampling from my phone directly to the machine however when I record the sample (playback/monitoring) the input sound is distorted, it has an “underwater” kind of sound. I searched online and I have every setting that I know of correct, line in 1 in mono, I am updated to the latest firmware. Is there something I’m missing? Or is the unit maybe defective. It’s about a week old.

Anyways, i solved it by putting a mixer in between. Not a user error here, so no blaming to the user. Many more people experience the same issues. The line inputs are not great. Have a good one.

At what level are you with the gain knobs on the back of Maschine? Usually they need to be quite pumped up, since Maschine Ins don’t have a very loud input.

Out of curiosity: why MONO? Phone signal is stereo

Input is maxed. The volume isn’t the issue it’s the distortion underwater sound. For example I tried a full song and the beat plays but the vocals dont. It has a “bad wire on my headphones” sound. And about recording in mono I used the 1/4 to 3.5 mm just to test it out because I had no clue you could record samples from your phone. So I ordered the dual splitters. But even if it’s mono it shouldn’t sound distorted.

Maybe the output of the phone is actually too hot. That could lead to heavy distortion destroying the higher frequency content of the signal. Have you tried turning down the input sensitivity or turning down the level on the phone?

I tried about 4 other devices. My phone an iPad my MacBook and a Bluetooth speaker. All sound the same. It’s really strange

As already stated, the phone audio ouput is most likely stereo (it would help if you gave the make and model of phone) so using the wrong kind of cable could easily give weird results.

From what you say, you have a stereo jack in a mono socket, so one channel is being grounded.

The signal needs to go to both Maschine inputs, left and right.

Just a guess - you are sending the unit mp3 audio which is encoded in joint stereo and your interconnect cable is not maintaining the stereo image as intended? Try a 3,5mm TRS into a Y cable with quarter inch jacks at the Maschine end

Interesting idea, but by playing back the joint (M/S encoded) mp3, it would be decoded back to L/R before being sent to the output of the phone, wouldn’t it?

Dear Community,

Any solution for this? Maschine + is marketed as a standalone machine, therefore it should be possible to attach a mic or phone without any mixer sitting between it. Is it possible these things are getting fixed in an software/firmware update? The levels for input are way too low for proper sampling now. I understand normalize, but this should not be the solution. All my other portable standalone gear has none of this issues.

Solution for what? The OP is not connecting things up properly, resulting in degraded audio with parts being muted. Is that what you're experiencing?

IME there's no problem with input level. I can get a good signal from my phone or from a mic. The complaints are mostly user error in my opinion.

the same here. I recorded from my iphone as well and it is very clear and loud hearable. So maybe the cables are not the right ones or your input is broken. It is not a common problem with maschine +. Have you done all updates so far? maybe do so, if not.

PS i am using an iphone 15 with USBC to Klinke 6,3mm. Works good so far.
